The Legion of Honor is one of the most exciting museums in San Francisco, presenting a collection of ancient and European art that spans over 6,000 years, across two levels.

The museum's extensive European collection predominantly features French art, with eminent sculptures by Auguste Rodin, such as a cast of "The Thinker", which greets visitors as they enter. Pieces from renowned artists like El Greco, Titian, Rembrandt, Monet, and van Gogh also grace the museum's galleries. The museum's array of European Decorative Arts features unique items like a gilded Spanish ceiling from around 1500 and Horace Walpole’s commode of 1763.

On the lower level, the Hall of Antiquities showcases many works from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Here, visitors can marvel at a 4,000-year-old figure of Seneb, an Egyptian royal scribe, among other fascinating artifacts. The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts maintains a collection of over 90,000 works on paper, the largest in the western United States.

If traveling by car, there is free parking available in front and on the north side of the museum. The Muni bus services 1, 18 and 38 leave you in front or within walking distance of the Legion of Honor.

When is the Legion of Honor ?

The Legion of Honor is open between 9:30 AM and 5:15 PM, from Tuesday to Sunday. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
