1 – See great artworks at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The most comprehensive art museum in the state and one of the largest in the country, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a real treat for art lovers.
With the largest collection of Art Nouveau objects outside of Paris as well as one of the finest collections of American art, the museum is an amazing resource for visitors.
The permanent collection includes over 35,000 artworks from over 5000 years of history. The VMFA is open 365 days a year and general admission is free.
2 – Tour the historic Virginia State Capitol
As the second oldest active statehouse in the country, The Virginia State Capitol has witnessed some momentous and historic events.
In December 1791, the Capitol housed the assembly where the Bill of Rights was ratified to the United States Constitution.

One of the leading American business women of her day, Maggie L. Walker was the first African American Women to charter and preside over a bank.

Visitors can tour the former home of M. L Walker, which she lived in for the last 30 years of her life, and visit the Walker Memorial Plaza to see a statue of her.
The building used by the Independent Order of St.Luke, known as St. Luke Hall, can also be viewed from the street.
11 – Discover Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Voted one of the top five gardens in the country, Lewis Ginter contains over a dozen gardens on its 50-acre grounds.
The centerpiece of the gardens is the large glass conservatory, which is the only one of its kind in this part of the country.
Visitors can follow winding paths throughout which reveal picturesque surprises around each turn. Visit the Children’s Garden for an interactive experience or learn about medicinal plants in the Healing Garden.

12 – Explore the Poe Museum
Home to the largest collection of Edgar Allan Poe artifacts and writings, The Poe Museum is dedicated to one of the country’s most influential writers and one of Richmond’s most famous sons.

Its exhibits include furniture from the author’s childhood home as well as clothing and early and first edition prints of The Raven and Tamerlane.

13 – See the graves of presidents at Hollywood Cemetery
While a cemetery may not seem like a fun place to visit, Hollywood Cemetery is the final resting place to no less than two United States Presidents.
James Monroe and John Tyler, the fifth and tenth US Presidents, are both buried here as well as the Confederate States President Jefferson Davis and over twenty Confederate Generals.
The cemetery has a 27-meter high pyramid memorial to the Confederate dead which was constructed in the mid-1800s. Definitely check out this historic and fascinating cemetery while in Richmond.

The award-winning American Civil War Museum in Downtown Richmond is a must-visit for history buffs.
Located in the historic Tredegar ironworks, that supplied weapons to the confederate troops, the museum’s permanent collection contains hundreds of artifacts including hand weapons, uniforms and canons.

The home of the Confederacy President Jefferson Davis and his family from 1861-1865, The White House of the Confederacy is a National Historic Landmark. It houses a museum with lots of information about the Civil War.
Guided tours are offered throughout the day and run from Friday until Monday. For those interested in American history, especially the Civil War period, the White House of the Confederacy is a must-see.
20 – Hike the Texas Beach trail at James River Park
The leafy trails of Texas Beach offer some of the nicest hikes in the city. Situated on the North bank of the James River, the Texas Beach trails run for a couple of miles through forest and rocky river bank terrain.
The area is also home to the Treasure Island Community Skatepark and has access points to the river.
The large flat rocks in the area are the ideal place to take a picnic or sunbathe next to the gently flowing water. Texas Beach is definitely worth a visit during your time in Richmond.
21 – Rattle through the streets on an RVA Trolley
Hop on board a classic RVA trolley to explore Richmond in style! These old-fashioned 1920s-style trolleys tour a variety of interesting routes about the city.

38 – Picnic at Forest Hill Park & Chimborazo Park
There are few places better to spend a sunny afternoon in the city than in Foret hill Park. The site has an interesting history and was previously a trolley terminus and well as housing the Forest Hill Amusement Park until the 1930s.
The park has some forested areas that are great for spotting wildlife and its thriving wetland regularly attracts otters, Blue Heron and eagles.
There are also tennis courts, playgrounds and picnic areas so you can really make a day of it.
Once the site of significant military action and one of the country’s largest military hospitals during the Civil War period, Chimborazo Park is now a peaceful place to escape the bustle of the city.
The park has some historic buildings including a roundhouse from the early 1900s and a medical museum.
There are some nice grassy spaces to walk and benches to relax on beneath the large old trees. The park has a miniature statue of liberty which was gifted to the city in 1951 by the Boy Scouts.

The Virginia War Memorial was originally designated in 1950 to remember the 10,000 Virginia natives that died serving in World War II.
The Virginia War Memorial now covers servicemen who died in other foreign wars including, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf Wars.
The memorial features a 22-foot statue and a modern but classic design. It also houses a museum, veteran’s art gallery, recording studios to document wartime experiences and much more.
41 – Visit the iconic Branch Museum of Architecture and Design
Branch House was constructed as the private residence of John Kerr Branch in the early 1900s.
The house is was designed by the prominent architecture firm of John Russell Pope, who went on to create designs for the Jefferson Memorial and National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
It is now home to the Branch Museum of Architecture and Design that features information about the house’s construction and hosts regular temporary exhibitions.
42 – Get spooked on a ghost tour

43 – Visit historic sites at Richmond National Battlefield Park
During the Civil War, Richmond was the center of governance for the confederacy and a major manufacturing hub for the war effort.
Much of the war’s most fierce battles were fought in and around the city and there are lots of sites to explore for the interested visitor.
National Battlefield Park contains no less than eight battle sites as well as numerous other places with significant ties to the Civil War.
A good starting point for exploration is the Chimborazo Medical Museum which also houses the Battlefield Park Visitor’s Center.
44 – Attend the Virginia Holocaust Museum
The Virginia Holocaust Museum covers the history of the European Jewish Holocaust through personal accounts and stories.
A collection of 300 artifacts brings the story of the Holocaust to life and demonstrates the dangers of intolerance and prejudice in society.
Explore the personal stories of those fleeing oppression in 1900s Europe. Visit a recreation of the Nuremberg Trials and see and touch objects that illustrate the weight of these events.
The Museum is free to visit and also features a program of temporary exhibitions related to the Holocaust and other genocides.

46 – Step back in time at The Richmond Railroad Museum
A trip to the Richmond Railroad Museum is always a fun day out. Covering 150 years of Virginia’s railroad history, the museum has everything from locomotives and carriages to route maps and dining car china.
Explore the Station Masters Office and a working telegraph system. See lanterns and signals used to direct trains on the railroad network.

48 – See Broadway productions at Altria Theater
Another of the city’s fantastic venues to catch live music or an evening of comedy is the Altria Theater.
First opening in the 1920s, the Altria was one of the finest theaters in the Country and has hosted legendary artists like Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Sinatra in its 90-year existence.
The Altria hosts some of the best Broadway musicals to pass through the city such as Wicked, The Lion King and Fiddler on the Roof. Definitely check it out while you are in Richmond.
49 – Visit an English Manor at Agecroft Hall & Gardens
You may be surprised to see an English Tudor Manor House in the heart of Virginia.
The hall was originally built in Lancashire, England in the late 1400s and was dismantled and shipped to Richmond in the 1920s by wealthy entrepreneur Thomas. C Williams Jr.
Visitors can take a guided tour of the hall and gardens and attend a variety of historic reenactments and seasonal events throughout the year.
The hall hosts an annual Shakespeare Festival with productions of some of The Bard’s best-loved plays.
