Multi-day Tours and Trips from Thessaloniki

In the north-west corner of the Aegean Sea lies the city of Thessaloniki. Now Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki was founded nearly 2,400 years ago.

The city is one of the world’s top tourist destinations and it is not difficult to see why – with its long and fascinating history, Mediterranean climate and perfect position as a base for travel in and around Greece.

You could easily spend days just visiting attractions in Thessaloniki, the cultural and entertainment capital of northern Greece.

However, to take full advantage of your time at this center of ancient civilization, consider a multi-day trip from Thessaloniki and further afield to some of the many captivating sites in the region.

2-Day trips from Thessaloniki

On a 2-day trip from Thessaloniki, you will journey to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Meteora. Precipitously built complexes of Byzantine monasteries are situated at these unusual rock formations close to the town of Kalabaka.

Meteora is not only a place of religious and artistic significance, but also of exceptional architectural beauty.

The tour begins with a rail trip that passes the foothills of Mount Olympus and onward to Kalabaka via Paleofarsalos. A guide will meet you in Kalabaka and drive you to Meteora to appreciate the spectacular sunset.

The second day of your trip starts after breakfast with a Meteora tour. The morning is spent either hiking among the rocks or exploring the exquisite monasteries. Six of the original monasteries remain on the immense pillars and boulders in the area.

After a tasty lunch and some time at your leisure, you will be driven by your guide to the station for your return train journey to Thessaloniki.

3-Day trips from Thessaloniki

If you would like to spend more time in Meteora, you can elect to book a 3-day tour from Thessaloniki.

On these tours, you can either spend the additional time relaxing and exploring in this spectacular area or pay a visit to the Natural History Museum of Meteora and nearby Mushroom Museum.

The Digital Projection Center also offers a 3-D experience of Meteora’s history and culture.

For an equally unforgettable experience, a 3-day hiking tour in the Olympus National Park traverses the eastern side of the mountain with overnight stays in mountain refuges.

In the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve your guide will reveal more about the myths, history and natural beauty of the legendary mountain as you trek the 12 Gods Trails.

On Mount Olympus you can experience the views of Zeus from the plateau of the muses, 2,700 meters above sea level.

4-Day trips from Thessaloniki

A 4-day tour from Thessaloniki allows you to visit some of the country’s top archaeological sites and experience the hospitality Greece is famous for.

With a small group of up to six people, a 4-day trip first visits Meteora and its renowned monasteries. There will be time for a photo stop at the statue of Leonidas, the King of Sparta before arriving at Delphi to overnight.

In Delphi you will travel back to the times of Ancient Greek mythology with visits to the Delphic Sanctuary, site of the infamous Greek oracle. After lunch the tour heads to the coastal city of Nafplio for a walking tour and overnight stay.

The ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the golden kingdom of Mycenae and the baroque fortress of Palamidi are all sites on the third day of travelling. Ancient Olympia is your resting place after this full day of touring.

The final day of the 4-day trips starts with a visit to the archaeological site of ancient Olympia. Here you will learn about the birth of the ancient Greek games, the history of ancient Greece and the significance of this valley that lies between the Kladeos and Alfeios Rivers.

In the afternoon, the tour returns to Thessaloniki via the Rio-Antirrioa Bridge.
