The Aquarium of Seville is one of the city’s newer attractions, opening in 2014 along the banks of the Guadalquivir River. However, despite its limited history, the site is already home to more than 7,000 marine animals from over 400 species. These are split across 35 different tanks, showcasing fish from across the world in each of the aquarium’s five sections.
These areas include the Guadalquivir, Atlantic, Amazonian, Pacific and Indo-Pacific, which are modeled after the adventures of Magallanes in the 16th century. The Portuguese explorer was the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean after setting sail on a voyage to find a western sea route to the Spice Islands — an archipelago in Indonesia now referred to as the Maluku Islands.
The areas of the aquarium follow in his footsteps, taking visitors on an expedition across the oceans the intrepid explorer traveled, and exhibiting the sea life that existed in those waters. Although Magallanes began this quest with much enthusiasm, he died during the Battle of Mactan after encountering anti-colonial indigenous tribes in the Philipines. His voyage was finished by Juan Sebastián Elcano, who journeyed across the Indo-Pacific and which is included in the aquarium. Alongside marine animals, guests can also discover the river fish that live in the Guadalquivir River, just outside the site’s doors.
Among the myriad of fish species that can be found inside the aquarium are Grace Kelly groupers, which are recognizable by their black and white spotted bodies, as well as parrotfish — known for their glistening multicolored appearance.
Pufferfish can also be seen here and inflate when they feel threatened by predators. Each pufferfish contains a lethal toxin that has the potential to kill up to 30 adult humans. Fans of “Finding Nemo” will be thrilled to discover an array of surgeonfish — often called “Dory” fish after the beloved Pixar character.
Some of the larger creatures you can also expect to see on an Aquarium of Seville tour are crocodiles, giant octopi and Amazonian matamata turtles. The aquarium also houses the most endangered cetacean in the world — the vaquita — which is endemic to the Gulf of California in Baja California, Mexico. It’s estimated that just 10 of these dolphin-like beings exist in the wild and they are considered to be on the brink of extinction.
Four different types of sharks - whitetips, blacktips, grays and hammerheads - call the aquarium home and their presence helps to educate visitors on the misunderstood yet magnificent beings.
The Aquarium of Seville is located along the banks of the Guadalquivir River, next to the Parque de María Luisa, one of the city's most visited spots. You can choose to visit the aquarium via Seville’s metro or bus service.
The closest metro station to the site is Puerta Jerez, which is located next to the Royal Alcázar of Seville and is a 15-minute walk from the aquarium. You’ll walk in a southerly direction along the river and through the park to reach the Aquarium of Seville.
Alternatively, you can use bus Lines 3, 6 or 34 to reach the site which departs at the La Palmera stop and drops you off about 10 minutes away on foot from the aquarium.
The Aquarium of Seville is open every day of the week and the opening hours are seasonal.
