Multi-day Tours and Trips from Fez

Fez, also known as Fes, is an inland city located in northern Morocco. Situated close to the Atlas Mountains, the city is a link between several important cities and regions and is the perfect starting point for a multi-day trip into the region.

Like much of Morocco, Fez has a fascinating history and has served as a meeting point both historically and in modern times. The medina of Fez is listed as World Heritage Site and is the oldest urban pedestrian zone in the world.

As the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco, this city that has been called the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of the East” is a well-positioned starting point for multi-day excursions from Fez into the vast Sahara Desert, and onward to what lies just out of sight.

2-Day trips

A guided 2-day trip from Fez is great if you’re running on a tight schedule but still want to see some of the desert highlights in central Morocco.

On a guided tour day trip, you will leave the bustling city of Fez and either head out towards the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert or towards the Ka’ala Mountains in Morocco’s north west.

Memorable stops on short tours to the desert include the ski-resort of Ifrane, built in the style of a Swiss Alpine Village, the Azrou cedar forest and the town of Midelt which is famous for its fossils and rock formations.

These tours typically continue to Merzouga where you will swap your motorized 4x4 vehicle for a camel ride to the overnight Berber Camp among the dunes at Erg Chebbi.

Tours heading to the Ka’ala Mountains and forests usually overnight in the city of Chefchaouen. Here the buildings are renowned for being painted in varying shades of blue.

This region is a Mediterranean biodiversity hotspot and is home to an exceptional number of endemic and threatened plants and animals.

Private and small-group tours are both possible, and your guide will ensure that your experience is tailored to suit the make-up of your group.

Other memorable attractions that might be included on a 2-day overnight tour from Fez are the ancient Moroccan walls and gates at Meknes and the Roman ruins at Volubilis.

3-Day trips

On a 3-day small group or private guided tour from Fez you have the opportunity to pause and appreciate the vastness and beauty of the Moroccan Landscape.

Many 3-day tours from Fez travel to Marrakech. Typically, this tour route is similar to the ancient caravan routes followed by traders and nomads for centuries.

Merzouga is the destination for your first night and on the way you will travel through cedar forests, the Swiss styled resort town of Ifrane, and Medelt.

After overnighting in a nomadic camp, your trip continues through the Todra Gorge with its imposing cliffs and into the Dades Valley, where fortresses and rock formations will capture your attention.

Day three sees your group arriving in Marrakech. This fascinating city comprises an old fortified city, the medina quarter and is home to awe-inspiring mosques, palaces and gardens.

The medina quarter with its busy souks and maze-like alleys is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Moorish minaret of the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque is a visible symbol of the red walled city.

Tours of this kind usually end in Marrakech and you will need to plan your onward travel accordingly.

If you would like a 3-day tour that begins and ends in Fez, you can expect a slower pace of exploration with the second day of your tour including a closer look at the nomadic settlements in the Merzouga region.

4-Day trips

4-Day tours that depart from Fez usually end in the imperial city of Marrakech. Tours can be booked on a private basis or you can join a small group of other guests to explore this North African cultural treasure.

After departing from Fez, a typical tour heads for Ifrane, where you will find an unlikely Swiss Ski Resort style village. Next on the journey is Azrou. If you are fortunate, you may catch a glimpse of the Barbary apes who inhabit the forest.

Merzouga is the first overnight destination from where you will spend the following day exploring the desert by 4x4 vehicles and riding a camel across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. On this night, you will sleep at a luxury camp under the desert stars.

The Tedros and Dades Gorges are on the itinerary for the third day of the tour. You will have some time to appreciate the sheer scale of these immense cliffs before heading to your overnight accommodation.

On the final day of touring, a visit to the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah is a highlight. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the location of many films, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator and series including Game of Thrones.

Before arriving in Marrakech there is time to stop for a panoramic sighting from the Tizi ntichka pass in the High Atlas Mountains.

For a 4-day tour that includes even more Moroccan history, heritage and culture, consider an Imperial Cities tour. You will tour Fez and the Roman ruins of Volubilis on day 1.

The ancient gated city of Meknes is the next stop on your trip, with the capital of Morocco, Rabat being your destination on day 3.

In Rabat you will be able to see how ancient Islamic art lies alongside the modern city before you head to Marrakech, the end-point of your journey.
