Palma Cathedral was built over a period of almost 400 years by the Crown of Aragón and construction began in the first half of the 13th century.

This religious monument was erected upon the site of an ancient Moorish mosque — Medina Mayurca — and it was designed in a classic Gothic style.

It was King James I who decided to demolish this Islamic monument and replace it with a Catholic church. The site was built in stages, first the main altar, followed by the Trinity Chapel, and lastly the bell tower.

Once the cathedral was finished, it was filled with Christian artworks, including its ornate altarpiece, detailing the Feast of Corpus Christi.

The monument features the largest Gothic rose window in the world. The rosette measures almost 14 meters across and is formed of over 1,200 pieces of glass.

Renovations to the cathedral took place in the 19th and 20th centuries after an earthquake destroyed parts of the building in 1851.

The famed Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí, led the remodel of the interior, however, was later let go by the church because his ideas were too focused on the Art Nouveau style.

In 2007, a mural was added to the site, which depicted the Biblical scene from John 6:1-14 when Jesus fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two fish.

This masterpiece was created by Miquel Barceló who is known for his bronze sculptures and unusually-designed ceramics, and the artwork used over 15 tons of clay .

The cathedral is one of the tallest in Europe, standing at over 40 meters and can house 18,000 people. Its bell tower features nine bells and through this part of the site, you can access the chapterhouse museum.

The largest of these bells weighs more than 4,500 kilograms and measures 2 meters in diameter.
