What will you see inside?

It is believed by several archaeologists that the roots of Derinkuyu Underground City go back as far as the 7th or 8th century B.C. when it is thought that the Phrygians built caves in this location.

These were then developed into the complex, multi-level city you see today by the ancient Romans. They came into use during the Byzantine era when residents of the surrounding area sought protection from raids by Arab Muslims during the Arab-Byzantine Wars, a series of battles that occurred between the 8th and 12th centuries.

At its prime, Derinkuyu Underground City had the space to comfortably shelter approximately 20,000 people, alongside their livestock. As well as living quarters, this developed city also had stables, cellars and chapels, all of which made for a convenient temporary living situation.

While it was primarily used during the Arab-Byzantine Wars, Derinkuyu Underground City also provided refuge to the area’s Christians during the Mongol incursions of Timur in the 14th century. The site was used repeatedly up until the 20th century, whenever the residents were at risk of attack.

The complex was then abandoned in 1923 after Turkey’s Christian population, many of whom lived in this region, were banished to other neighboring countries. However, the underground city did not lie dormant for long as it was rediscovered and fully excavated just 40 years later.

Since this time, the archaeological landmark has served as a tourist attraction and those with Derinkuyu Underground City tickets can explore around half of the original site, including its prisoner holding area, stables and kitchens.

The underground city burrows as far as 85 meters below ground and is spread across eight levels. Each of these levels could be sealed off separately, providing additional protection in the case of a raid.

One of the most interesting facts about the Derinkuyu is that it was linked with another, smaller underground city, Kaymakli, via a series of tunnels. However, as the largest and best excavated of its type in Turkey, Derinkuyu Underground City is most popular among tourists.

How to get there?

Derinkuyu Underground City is located just outside the town of Derinkuyu, in the Nevşehir province of Central Anatolia, Turkey.

It is easy to reach the site, even without access to a car. You’ll start by traveling to Nevşehir, which is accessible from many points across the area. You'll then head to Nevşehir's central dolmuş stand where you can board the bus marked as journeying to Derinkuyu Koop. You’ll depart at Derinkuyu Otogarı, which is located just outside the underground city.

This route runs several times an hour throughout the day and is a budget friendly option, making it convenient for all tourists.

Those who would prefer private transportation can instead arrange for a driver to take them directly to the site from their hotel.

What are the opening times?

Derinkuyu Underground City is open daily throughout the year between 8 AM and 5 PM. The box office for ticket sales closes at 4:15 PM.

Is it wheelchair friendly?
