What will you see inside the crypts?

You’ll find the Gaudi Crypt inside the textile village of Colonia Güell, just outside Barcelona. Although it’s known as a crypt, this place of worship is actually a church and is still in use today.

The crypt is where Gaudi honed his craft, before taking his experimental architecture back into the city to create La Sagrada Familia. He never finished the crypt, but it remains one of the most beautiful buildings in the region.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, the church is a mesmerizing workshop of twisted columns and soaring arches.

During your Gaudi Crypt visit, you’ll discover some of the thought processes behind the architect’s distinctive style.

Built into the hillside, this innovative church defies both convention and gravity, with enough ornamentation to keep even the most avid photographers happy.

After you’ve seen the church, take time to explore the streets of the Colonia Güell. Entry is included in your Gaudi Crypt ticket which gives you access to the permanent exhibition and Interpretation Center.

As you stroll through this modernist village, you’ll get to experience some of the finest architecture in Spain. Keep an eye out for the ceramic tilework which is particularly impressive.

How to get to the Gaudi Crypt?

The Gaudi Crypt is located outside the city, in the nearby town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló. The best way to get there is on the train from Plaza España in Barcelona, using lines S3, S4, S8 or S9. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

You’ll need to jump off at the Colonia Güell station, then cross the road and follow the blue steps to the Visitor’s Center.

What time of day should you visit the Gaudi Crypt?

The Gaudi Crypt is open daily between 10 AM and 3 PM throughout the year. It is only closed on public holidays.

To avoid the crowds, time your visit for early morning or late afternoon. Weekends are usually busier than weekdays.
