The Vicens family commissioned Antoni Gaudì to design a unique summer home in Barcelona in 1883. This was Gaudì’s first major commission and is the project that launched his successful career.
Casa Vicens is unlike most of Gaudì’s other work as there is a strong oriental influence and the structure is actually one of the very first examples of aesthetic renewal.
Although the vacation home was built using traditional Catalan building techniques, the look of the building was unlike anything else at the time. Gaudì used a variety of style influences, colors and textures to create something truly unique and innovative.
Casa Vicens has been extremely well-preserved, and walking through the museum gives you a very good idea of what the home must have looked like when it was first presented to the Vicens family.
How can you get there?
Thanks to Casa Vicens’ central location, it is straightforward to reach via metro or bus. The closest metro stop to Casa Vicens is Fontana and you can reach the museum by taking bus lines 22, 27, 32, 87, 114, N4 and V17.
The Hop-On Hop-Off Barcelona bus also makes a stop at Casa Vicens when you travel on its blue line.
What are the opening hours?
Casa Vicens is open every day between 10 AM to 8 PM during the months of April, May, June, July, August, September and October. Between November and March, the museum is open on Mondays from 10 AM to 3 PM, and from 10 AM to 7 PM during the rest of the week.
The museum is also closed on major public holidays, including Christmas Day, and may be closed for maintenance from time to time.
Is it wheelchair friendly?
Casa Vicens is completely wheelchair accessible as there is a broad elevator that stops on every level, including the rooftop. There is even a tour available that is specially designed for those with reduced mobility.
