Welcoming locals since 1905, the highly unique Maeklong Railway Market tour in Bangkok is one of Thailand’s most spectacular sights.
Located on the tracks of the Maeklong Railway Line, it was once just a small collection of vendors selling products to local residents. Today, it’s a vibrant and bustling spot that welcomes both Thais and visitors from around the world.
Here's all you need to know about the Maeklong Railway Market, one of the most interesting attractions in Bangkok.
The Maeklong Railway Market is nestled in the Samut Songkhram Province, about 70 kilometers southwest of Bangkok. It sits right next to the Chao Phraya River, which spills out into the Gulf of Thailand.
The best way to get there is to drive, either by taxi or on a guided tour. The drive will take just over an hour, depending on traffic.
When you arrive at the Maeklong Railway Market, the most obvious attraction is watching the train pass through the middle of the market. The locals call it ‘Siang Tai’ (life-risking), and it’s quite a sight to behold!
The vendors in the market will draw in their awnings (temporarily closing up their stalls) in order to make way for the train. A collaborative effort of dozens of local sellers, this is also why the market's been dubbed the 'umbrella pulldown market'.
Train aside, this is a fully working market, with a smorgasbord of fruit, vegetables, seafood and other produce from the region. It is also one of the largest fresh seafood markets in Thailand, selling a variety of fish, crabs, prawns and squid.
While you're in the area, check out the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market as well. This is a great spot to get some souvenirs and local snacks. The Bang Kung temple, the nearby Amphawa Floating Market, and the Ayutthaya Ruins are also worth a visit for those looking for a deeper insight into Thai culture and traditions.
After being picked up from your Bangkok hotel, your driver will take you straight to the Maeklong Railway Market. After wandering around, you'll then be taken to the nearby Amphawa Floating Market, where you'll get the chance to see a different style of market.
Similar to the full day tour, this tour will allow you to witness the Maeklong Railway Market, but then take you straight to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in the nearby Damnoen Saduak district, one of the largest and most popular floating markets in Thailand. A boat ride around the market's canals is what really makes the experience.
Mixing three of the area's most beloved tourist spots, this tour starts with convenient hotel pickup and then takes you to the Maeklong Railway Market. After witnessing the train pass through, you'll then get to see the organized chaos of the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
After lunch at a local restaurant and a quick stop at Wat Phra Kaew, you'll then check out the Grand Palace, the former home of the Thai royal family.
In addition to the area's two most unique market, this tour also includes a visit to the UNESCO-protected Ayutthaya Ruins.
Burned to the ground in the 1760s and never formally rebuilt, this site is now an archaeological park and includes several temples, palaces and other fascinating historical buildings.
A half-day tour of the Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market costs between US$30 and US$50, while a longer, full-day tour (such as the tour of the Amphawa Floating Market & Maeklong Railway Train Market) costs between US$40 and US$60 for small group tours,
A more comprehensive tour, that combines the local markets with attractions like the Grand Palace or the Ayutthaya ruins will usually cost between US$70 and US$100 per person.
Every tour is different, so it's best to double-check with the tour operator before booking.
You will not be required to make your own way to the Maeklong Railway Market as most tours offered will include convenient pickup (and drop-off) at your Bangkok accommodation.
However, it is best to double-check this with your tour provider, as they may require you to meet them at a designated location in Bangkok.
The train passes eight times a day, so you better check it in advance in order to witness how the market changes.
