The National Palace of Queluz is one of Portugal’s most historically important buildings, as the palace served as the residence for three generations of royals and provided the backdrop for many famous scenes and events, including soirees and balls.

The palace has undergone various remodelings and extensions over the years and the diversity in architecture is evidence of the evolution of various styles and tastes.

You’ll see architecture that was popular throughout the Baroque and Rococo periods among others.

Walking through the palace and its well-manicured gardens provides a feast for the senses, so you should take your time to soak up all that Queluz Palace has to offer.

The palace

The palace is made up of dozens of grand rooms, with one of the most impressive rooms undoubtedly being the Throne Room. The Throne Room is the embodiment of the French Rococo style and is filled with ornate chandeliers and gold finishes.

A historical Clementi piano stands proudly in the center of the music room, which is said to be one of the oldest rooms in the entire palace. The room boasts ornate ceilings and was designed by Mateus Vicente de Oliveira.

The Hall of Tiles is a large room of painted tiles that depict images and symbols of the four seasons. The colorful space is an art lover’s dream. There are several more rooms open to the public— all of which are interesting and unique in their own way.

The gardens

Queluz Palace’s gardens are just as impressive as the palace building itself. In addition to the well-manicured lawns and hedges, there are various sculptures by John Cheere — a famous 18th-century English sculptor.

The Tiled Canal, with its 150 meters of tiled walls and sluice of water, is one of the gardens’ main focal points. The colorful tiles depict typical 18th-century scenes and the canal has been kept in perfect condition.

The gardens also offer a labyrinth, a botanical garden, fountains, hedges, incredible views of the palace and so much more. You could spend hours strolling through the gardens and appreciating all the little details on offer.
