What are the best boat tours in Cairo?

Dinner cruise on the Nile River

Nothing quite beats a romantic dinner in Cairo as you cruise on the Nile River. As the city twinkles in the distance, you'll be treated to an array of delicious local dishes as part of an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Most dinner cruises feature special local entertainment, such as live music or belly dancing shows, and you'll even get to enjoy a few classic Arabic songs. Even though the tours are short, hotel pickup and drop-off is usually included, so you won't have to worry about getting to and from the boat.

Felucca sailing trip on the Nile River

For centuries, these traditional wooden sailboats have been the main mode of transportation along the Nile. Nowadays, they're mainly used by tourists for short trips and sightseeing excursions.

A felucca sailing cruise will take you away from the hustle and bustle of Cairo to explore some of the area's more serene spots. You'll sail up and down the river (usually for about an hour on the water), as your experienced captain navigates you past islands, temples and other scenic spots while sharing insights into the local customs and history.

Soft drinks and snacks are typically included, likewise hotel pickup and drop-off. Depending on the itinerary of your tour, you may get to learn how to operate the boat, or even stop for a swim.

3-4 day Nile River Cruise with flight from Cairo to Luxor

If you have a few days to spare and want to see not only Cairo but also Luxor and the surrounding areas, there are several multi-day packages that go from Cairo to downriver destinations like Luxor and Aswan.

While some cruises will take you over 800 kilometers along the Nile, passing through some of Egypt's most incredible cultural and natural sites, most actually start with a flight from Cairo to Aswan, from which you'll transfer onto a boat and sail upriver to Luxor.

In Aswan, you'll be able to check out the High Dam and the majestic Philae Temple before making your way north to the Kom Ombo area. This is where you'll find the unique Temple of Sobek as well as the Abu Simbel Temple.

Depending on how many days you have at your disposal, you might also get to explore the Ptolemaic Temple, the ruins of Karnak, as well as the Valley of Kings in Luxor, some of Egypt's most iconic historic sites. And if you have time to spare in Luxor, there are plenty of activities for you to enjoy, from hot-air ballooning over the city to horseback riding through lush palm groves.

Multi-day Nile River cruise of Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and more

If you have more time to spare and want to experience the full scope of the Nile's beauty and cultural richness, then you should consider a 6 to 8-day cruise package starting in Cairo.

The itinerary is similar to the 3-day and 4-day packages with similar stops in Luxor and Aswan, but it also usually includes additional excursions along the way such as temple visits in Kom Ombo, Dendera, and Edfu. You'll typically get to marvel at the breathtaking Abu Simbel Temple, visit Egypt's oldest temple in Abydos, and view the ruins of Karnak as well.

During your time in Luxor, you may have the option to take a hot air balloon ride over the West Bank, which offers stunning aerial views of some of the area's most iconic temples. And in Aswan, you can visit the High Dam, Philae Temple, and several ancient Nubian villages on an unforgettable sightseeing tour.

These longer tours also usually include a day or two to check off all the main attractions in Cairo, before boarding your flight down to Aswan or Luxor (where your boat awaits). Led by a local guide, you'll get an inside look at Giza and the Pyramids, as well as The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, a historic treasure trove home to 120,000 artifacts.
