The Gulf Shores area is one of the best destinations in Alabama to see dolphins. Nine species of dolphins call the gulf home, and visitors can catch an exhilarating cruise ride to see the playful animals up close.

There are many different cruise offerings to fit any budget and needs, but most boats come equipped with open decks, comfortable seating, air-conditioned cabins, and a snack bar. You can also bring your own small ice cooler packed with drinks and snacks (and don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses if you’re taking a mid-day cruise!).

Smaller cruises like the Sunny Lady offer a more intimate setting that allows for better visibility and photo ops. Boats depart from Orange Beach and take you deep into the intercoastal waterways for better chances of crossing paths with marine wildlife.

Dolphin cruises usually last around 1.5 hours and are available throughout the day as well as during sunset hours for stunning photography.

2 – Embrace your wild side at Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park, Alabama

Gulf State Park sits right on the Gulf of Mexico and extends over an area of 6,500 acres. While the park is best known for its beautiful, quiet, white sand beaches, it also offers visitors a selection of marshland, pine forests, and lakes. Lake Shelby in particular is a major attraction because of its ideal conditions for canoeing and kayaking –you can even rent a paddleboard here if you’re up for trying something different.

In addition to nature trails for hiking and biking, there’s a golf course, a zip line, and a nature center filled with resources and educational programs at the park. Cottages and cabins are available for rent, and there’s also a modern campground within the park if you want to spend a night or two under the stars.

If you’re visiting in the spring, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for birdwatching. Traveling with friends or family? There’s a beach pavilion and a picnic area by the lake where you can use the charcoal grills, bring your own lunch, and even take a quick shower after playing in the sand.

Visitors can see them up close from a raised boardwalk as they move around the property. This is the best way to learn about their behavior and lives without interfering. Check out their website for feeding times – if you’re there during one of them (three times a day), you might be able to participate in the experience under the guidance of a professional.

In addition to large mammals like Bengal tigers and American black bears, the zoo also has a large reptile house, camels, a significant number of primates, and a petting zoo where you can make friends with a donkey or a sheep.

The zoo offers “animal encounters” that allow you to get up close and personal with adorable two-toed sloths as well as other animals. These unique exhibits are led by animal experts so they can be educative for all involved. There are also stage shows featuring some of the friendlier animals – which include a cockatoo and a lynx.

If this is your time trying this sport, consider booking a lesson, where you’ll learn how to stand up on the board and receive instruction both on the beach and in the water.

Lessons usually come with everything you need to get on the water, including the instructor, board rental, life jacket if you want one, and the technical skills needed for a fun experience. For a unique twist, try SUP Yoga, which allows you to practice yoga in a private or very small group right on the boards.

Although nothing remains of that settlement, the place where it once stood is marked by a plaque commemorating the arrival of some of the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto’s men to the area.

The Shell Banks Baptist Church sits where the village used to stand, and offers service twice a week if you want to stop by.

Otherwise, there are other interesting markers nearby, including one for the 1882 Swift Coles Historic Home, which still stands today and can be toured to learn more about the history of the area.
