1 – Wander around the Old Venetian Port of Chania
Right along the main shore, this historic harbor dates all the way back to the Venetian era of the 13th century, when the Republic took over Crete. And it was certainly a labor of love; the construction process took nearly 300 years!
At that time, the harbor developed into a full-fledged naval stronghold, where goods were stored and boats were built and launched.
While there aren’t too many of the original structures still around today, the port itself remains as busy and vibrant as it was 800 years ago, with lots of great spots to stroll around and get a feel for the city.
Grab a nice meal, people-watch, or take a leisurely walk alongside the sea, where you can still spot modern-day boats bobbing in the sea.
2 – Explore the beauty of Old Town
The name somewhat gives it away, but the Old Town region is lively and bursting with charm, from the weathered streets to the horse-drawn carriages that clop along them.
And the possibilities for fun are endless here! Sample your way through the lively Agora Market, browse for handicrafts, or amble around the Turkish District to explore the ongoing influence of the diaspora in the city.
And if you’re interested in religious buildings, this is the perfect place to explore; you can stroll past the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (see #9) one moment, then admire the Orthodox halls of the Church of Agios Nikolaos (see #7) the next.
This is one neighborhood where the past is always present!
3 – Pay a visit to Firka Venetian Fortress
Another relic from the days of the Republic, this imposing structure was designed to protect the port from a constant barrage of threats – from other empires to swarms of raiding parties!
From humble beginnings as a series of barracks and storage areas, the complex blossomed into an impressively fortified space, with plenty of vantage points and strategic spots to perch defensive cannons.
Subsequent Ottoman rulers also utilized the space (the name “Firka” is actually a Turkish word for “barrack”), both as a military post and a jail; and in more recent decades, the apace has morphed again, this time into a vibrant relic of the multicultural past.
Perfectly located in the Old Town neighborhood, this is a wonderful site to visit if you want to see history come to life.
4 – Ponder the impact of the Lighthouse of Chania
Moving from the military background to the nautical, you can enjoy the stunning design of this towering lighthouse, which was built sometime in the 1500s.
But this isn’t your ordinary watchtower; in the olden days, it could actually be connected via chain to the Firka Fortress, creating an emergency barrier to close off the harbor in case of attacks.
In the 1800s, the structure got a major renovation, including a minaret and unique designs added by visiting Egyptian troops; it later got another facelift in 2005, though you can still see plenty of older details, including the original base from the Venetian days.
Now, the building looks as strong and beautiful as it did in its heyday; as you admire its many angles and attributes, you can easily picture the ships coming in and out, guided – or shunned – by its watchful eye.
5 – Shop around at the Old Chania Market
Built in the early 1900s, this lovely shopping area was based on the popular covered market of Marseille, France … but its character and offerings are 100% Greek!
Foodies will find themselves in heaven here, with everything from cheeses, fish, and meats to fresh vegetables, olive oils, and some delectable spices to spruce up your next meal.
And if you’re visiting in the summer, you may even be able to score some handicrafts to take home!
Take some time to browse between the many stalls, and enjoy the distinctive arch overhead as you do so; it’s a wonderful part of the bustling market scene that so defines local life!
6 – Indulge in some botanical relaxation at the Chania Municipal Garden
When you want a little dose of nature without leaving the heart of the city, this small, sweet park has got you covered!
From the time it was first opened in 1870, the garden was designed to be a public space, where residents could relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.
And today, you can still enjoy that same sense of tranquility, whether you’re watching the ducks at the pond or strolling in the shade of the many beautiful trees – including a ficus that’s been there since opening day!
7 – Admire the Church of Agios Nikolaos
This 14th-century beauty is a perfect showcase for the area’s religious diversity – while it was started as a church, it also served some time as a home for Islamic culture!
During the Turkish occupation, the building shifted from a Dominican monastery to the city’s biggest mosque.
You can still see evidence of this cultural crossover during your visit; the structure is actually the only one in Greece with a minaret and a bell tower side by side!
And after the Turks left, the space reverted to an Orthodox church; and as you explore its fascinating architectural mishmash, you’ll be able to see firsthand how different religious and political agendas shaped the city over the centuries.

How’s this for an interesting transition… church to soap factory!
During the regime change of the 1600s, this cathedral was turned into a manufacturing plant for cleaning products.
It wasn’t until the 1800s that it was turned back into a religious institution, and it has served as a cultural anchor of the Old Town area ever since, whether as a protective space for citizens in the midst of war or as an active religious institution in the community.
If you happen to be visiting in the fall, you may catch the formal presentation of the Virgin Mary statue, which takes place on November 21st.
10 – Check out the Küçük Hasan Mosque
With its distinctive domes and simple design, this mosque quickly draws the eye; and the treasures inside are equally intriguing!
For nearly 300 years, it was a significant place of worship for the local Muslim community; and after it closed in 1923, it went through a few different functions – from a museum to a storage space – before becoming a popular exhibition hall.

11 – Stock up on goods at Rue du Cuir (Rue Skridlof)
As one of the most intriguing and popular shopping areas in town, a stroll down this street is among the most iconic things to do in Chania – and there are all kinds of cool stuff to discover!
Sandals, handbags, and belts are in ample supply here, all made from the finest leather; and if you prefer different materials, there are also lots of booths selling beautiful glassware items.

12 – Go snorkeling and meet the aquatic locals

13 – Tour the Eleftherios Venizelos House
While he may not be a household name today, Eleftherios Venizelos was certainly one of the most impactful Greek politicians of the early 20th century. As the leader of the country’s liberation movement, he helped shape the nation into its present form and changed the way it interacted on the global stage.
And while you’re in Chania, you can actually visit his family home, and learn all about the man behind the policies. It was here that the future Prime Minister lived throughout much of his young adulthood, right up until he took office.
Even later in life, he would come back to live here permanently, and the space remained a hub of family activity even after he died.
As you tour the residence, you can see the same furniture and decor that the family lovingly utilized, and learn all about the house’s evolving role from private residence to public space and everywhere in between.
14 – Look around the Sabbionara Rampart
Out along the edge of the old Venetian walls, the Sabbionara Rampart boasts a unique design that was perfectly suited to its defensive purposes.
In the Republic’s heyday, it was one of the fortifying gates that could protect from invaders, and it’s the only remaining entryway of its kind in town, offering a glimpse into an active military past.
Take a look at the wall facing the sea as you pass by; it still bears the seal of Saint Mark, a symbol of Venice.
15 – Take a trip to Lazaretta Island
Among the many excellent local boat tours, the trip to Lazaretta Island is probably one of the coolest. After all, this is one of the most beautiful spots around, with quiet, sandy beaches leading right to the water, which is always packed with compelling marine creatures.
And its neighbors are equally intriguing, with rich mythological roots and haunting stories of military occupation during World War II. It’s a journey that’s both scenic and fascinating!

16 – Soak up the history of Agioi Theodoroi
And while we’re on the subject of those unique islands… This lovely little pair of islets have drawn fascination for ages; they’ve been mentioned in records stretching back almost a millennium!
And while there have been plenty of human visitors over the years – during your trip, you can catch a glimpse of everything from downed German warplanes to abandoned fortresses that were used to watch for pirates -, it’s also a haven for local animals.

Just ten minutes from the main part of the city, this charming neighborhood is fairly low-key now; but it was once one of the busiest industrial areas in town!
The city’s thriving leather trade got its start here, with the nearby shallow saltwater inlets playing a vital role in getting the materials cleaned and ready to be shaped.
The goods could be manufactured and delivered straight to town, without causing any logistical headaches (or strong smells) – the perfect situation for a flourishing industry!
The rows of stone buildings are the same, though they haven’t produced their signature goods since the 1970s; but as you amble between them and the water, you’ll almost be able to picture the factories running at full capacity!

But the square has seen many other historical events as well; it was here that scores of Greeks were killed during the 1821 revolution, and where, over 100 years later, the various bombings of World War II leveled several buildings.
And now, like so many other parts of town, it’s been revitalized into a vibrant full of bars and eateries, while still keeping the stories of the past front and center.
Grab a drink at one of the surrounding cafes, and absorb the whole unique scene.
22 – Engage in a stand-up paddle adventure
You may be craving even more time out on the water while you’re here – and a stand-up paddle excursion is certainly a great adventure!

You can also soak up some culture in the village of Spili, which features a lovely Folk Museum full of quirky and compelling artifacts; then pop over to Kournas Lake, the only freshwater lake on the island, where you can admire fish and enjoy a refreshing dip in the almost transparent waters.
33 – Enjoy the endless offerings of Chrisopigi Monastery
Since the 1500s, this charming church has served as both a cultural and religious community pillar… and even an early environmental adaptor!
Various groups of religious practitioners occupied the space over the years, but the current order of nuns, which arrived in 1976, has been among the most prominent – and remains a powerful force to this day!
They were the ones that helped develop the organic farmlands around the complex, which are still packed with olive groves, vegetable patches, and trees bursting with figs, apricots, and avocados.
They are also the group responsible for the phenomenal artwork inside; the murals are especially spectacular!

40 – Pay your respects at the Venizelos Graves
After visiting the place where Eleftherios Venizelos spent much of his life (see #13), it only seems fitting to pay a visit to his final resting place, along with some of his family.
The statesman was buried on this simple hilltop alongside his son, Sophoklis, who also served multiple times as Prime Minister of Greece.
And while their graves are the main attraction here, you can also admire a statue of the legendary 19th-century rebel Spyros Kagiales… and some of the best overlooks in Chania!
41 – Absorb the truths and fictions of Knossos Palace
For a day trip that’s packed with history inside and out, head over to the island’s capital, Heraklion, and explore the wonders of Knossos Palace!
Built roughly 3,500 years ago, this Minoan marvel is filled with stunning designs and amazing stories – including one of the most famous legends of the ancient world!
In Greek mythology, this was reported to be the place in which the notorious Minotaur – half-man, half-bull – was contained in a labyrinth by King Minos, before eventually being defeated by the hero Jason.
While most of the original structure was destroyed and later rebuilt, the reconstruction process was so meticulous that you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a compelling world that has long since vanished.
Just keep an eye out for mazes and monsters!
42 – Take a bike tour
No matter what your prior pedaling experience is, the local bike tours are sure to spark your adventurous side – and you’ll get plenty of fresh air along the way!
From dawn until dusk (and every time in between), you can enjoy a spirited ride around the city streets and past splendid harbor vistas, or even further out to natural phenomena like the Theriso Gorge.

From walls of jerseys to the game ball from Greece’s victorious European Football Championship in 2004, this is a true temple for sports fans; and even casual visitors will soon get caught up in the excitement!
