1 – Step in historic footsteps at Magellan’s Cross
Where better to start a tour of Cebu than at one of its most historic landmarks, Magellan’s Cross?
For those who don’t know, the Philippines was a Spanish colony for over 300 years.
Among the first Spanish visitors was the explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Magellan claimed the archipelago in the name of the Spanish Empire and named it after the Spanish King, Phillip II.
Magellan is recognized as one of the early European explorers and his legacy lives on in the names we use today, such as the Pacific Ocean which Magellan named, and the Magellan Straight, which was named after him. Though he is remembered somewhat heroically in Europe, this is not the case in the Philippines.
Many locals will proudly tell you that he was killed in battle by Chief Lapu-Lapu who resisted Spanish colonization and the Catholic religion. In their eyes, Lapu-Lapu is, very much, the hero of the story and Magellan is the villain.
Anyway, visitors can still see the cross that was planted by Magellan in the year 1521. Whatever your opinion of the explorer he is a part of Philippine history and this monument stands in memory of him, and the 300+ years of Spanish influence that would follow.
Looking for more information? Take a Cebu city tour during your time in the city and visit Magellan’s Cross, Fort San Pedro, and more with a knowledgeable local guide to show you around.
2 – Discover the Spanish colonial era, Fort San Pedro
One of the oldest (and smallest) forts of its type in the country, Fort San Pedro is a great next stop on your tour of Cebu. The current fort is made of stone and was likely constructed in the early to mid-1600s. It stands on foundations from an earlier wooden fort which is thought to date to around 1565.
The history of Fort San Pedro is intertwined with the countries. It was built for the first Spanish governor, Miguel López de Legazpi, and was later occupied by American troops. It would also serve as a school, a hospital for wounded World War II soldiers, a stronghold for revolutionaries in the country’s fight for independence, and a community garden.
For a tiny fee, visitors can tour this historic fort, and check out the relics from the Spanish colonial times in the fort museum. If you are interested in world history, Fort San Pedro and Magellan’s Cross are must-see things to do in Cebu.

The image of Santo Niño, a small figure of the child Jesus, is thought to have been brought to the city by Magellan in 1521. It was then lost and later discovered by a Spanish soldier after the destruction of a local village.
The church gained Basilica status in 1965 and its popularity with visitors continues to grow.
