1 – Explore Alcazaba of Almería
One thing you’ll quickly learn when visiting this city – and most of the ones in Spain, for that matter – is the tremendous impact that the former Moorish rulers had on the region; and Alcazaba of Almería is a particularly impressive example!
It’s certainly hard to miss the place, splayed out in fine fashion along the hillside, and as you explore its many walls and rooms, you’ll feel as if you’re back in the decadent days of old!
From powerful fortifying walls to private rooms, royal bathing areas to vibrant gardens, you can see the whole spectrum of activity that took place here, in a spectacular combination of defensive structures and domestic spaces.
2 – Amble around Puerta de Purchena
Another lovely relic that still plays a role in local life, this lovely square was once among the main entry points for the city.
For many years, Almería was walled, and this gate was a crucial portal to and from the outside world, but once those structures were taken down in the mid-1800s, the whole area got a stylish makeover.
Among its many treasures, Edificio De Las Mariposas stands out… just follow the butterflies!
Originally the luxury residence of the Rapallo Campos family, this gorgeous structure combines ornate designs with some quirky touches, including the beautiful iron-wrought insects that give the place its name.

3 – Take in the majesty of Almería Cathedral
It’s big, it’s beautiful, and it’s filled with stories… It’s the Almería Cathedral!

6 – Star in your own Western movie at Oasys Mini Hollywood
The Wild West…. In Spain? You’d better believe it!
It may be far from the original cowboy towns, but many classic films – and the stars that performed in them – have graced the manufactured streets of Oasys Mini Hollywood , which now serves as a combination of theme park and interactive film museum.
This dusty, delightful town is probably most famous as the setting for the classic spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars, starring none other than Clint Eastwood himself. but during the last few decades, it’s become a playground for every aspiring cowpoke and movie star.
Check out the amazing feats performed on horseback, stop in at the saloon for a wild dance show, then head back out to the street for a good old-fashioned shootout!

When some of the military fortifications started to disappear in the 1800s, the very design of the town began to shift; and one of the best additions was this striking green space, which neatly bridges the divide between the town and the main port.
The older section, Parque Viejo, was the section that first bloomed in the remnants of the defensive walls, and Parque Nuevo, the newer area, came onto the scene after the Civil War in the 1900s.
With some lovely bubbling fountains – including the charming Fuente de los Peces, famed for its quirky stone fish statues – and shady groves of aged trees, it’s a wonderful showcase of progress – and a great way to while away an afternoon!

This is another activity when you’ll have to trust your instincts and take the plunge… literally!
While bungee jumping can seem a little daunting at first glance, it’s perfectly safe – and with so much to see as you descend, this is a great area to do it!
Head up to the top of the platform and have a look around, then take your thrilling leap!
Whether you do the traditional headfirst route or try the courageous backwards hop, it’s a delightful, energizing experience that will certainly give you a memorable story to take home!
29 – Take a relaxing walk along Mirador de la Rambla de Almería
A short, sweet trail with plenty to offer for all types of exercisers, this is the ideal route if you want to enjoy some of the local beauty without going on an all-out trek!
Just outside of town, it takes about half an hour to complete; but you can certainly linger longer if you want to enjoy the stellar views and unspoiled beauty around you.

As you gaze at the hills around you, you might notice that one has a particularly striking piece of art: a sculpture of San Cristobal, the patron saint of travelers.

While a lot of the educational things to do in Almería focus on past centuries – or even millennia! -, there are also some powerful monuments to a much more recent conflict.
Taking place over much of the 20th century, the Spanish Civil War shaped the country and its people tremendously; and one of its lasting remnants can be found right here in town, courtesy of the tours that will lead you right into the shelters that played a major role in the lives of locals.
Also known as “Refugios de la Guerra Civil Española de Almería,” these bunkers and tunnels once kept thousands of citizens alive during the darkest days of the conflict, when bombings and violence were at an all-time high.
From makeshift hospitals to private rooms that still feature the drawings left behind by restless kids, it’s a thorough, poignant look into a difficult chapter in the nation’s past, and the ways that average people persevered through it all.
