1 – Admire the Cathedral of Zagreb
The swooping spires and Gothic details of this Catholic church is a suitably impressive place to start – after all, it’s one of the tallest and most iconic buildings in town!

Thanks to the hilly terrain, the city has traditionally been split into the Upper and Lower Town levels.

We’ve all had some gnarly dating mishaps, which is probably why a visit to the Museum of Broken Relationships is one of the most popular things to do in Zagreb!
This space brilliantly turns the physical debris from former romantic unions into powerful and sometimes poignant artifacts, capturing the little details that would otherwise be lost to time.
Photos, sketches, gifts, clothing – there’s no telling what you’ll find here, and each donated piece includes a personal story that reminds us all of the impact that love and loss can give to even the simplest items.
From the heartbreaking to the hilarious and everything in between, these stories are sure to intrigue – or at the very least, make you feel better about your own experiences!
5 – Explore the Lotrščak Tower
Roughly 800 years ago, this simple but imposing piece was built to protect the city; and while it hasn’t served that purpose for centuries, there are still plenty of hallmarks of its glory days!
There are the walls, of course, towering and strong, designed to deflect hoards of armies from other nations.
And at the top, you’ll get the same view that the military forces did, albeit with some newer buildings.
Keep looking, and you might even spot an authentic cannon, which fires off a particularly hearty hello to the town every day at noon!
6 – Try out some bike tours
From the biggest avenues to the hidden streets, the bike tours in Zagreb will help you see the town like never before!
They’re also ideal for covering a lot of ground, especially given the many hills and winding roads that make the city such a fascinating place.

There’s no mistaking this for one of the many other beautiful religious buildings in town; just look for the massive Croatian insignia on the roof!
This vividly colored beauty has helped anchor the town since the 1200s, and its inside is just as glorious as its outside, with murals that showcase the different art styles over the years.
And despite all of its renovations and changes, it’s always been deeply anchored to the city; look closely at the exterior wall, and you’ll see the city’s oldest coat of arms, dating all the way back to 1499, carefully etched into the stonework.
This place is certainly a source of civic pride, and rightfully so!
8 – Visit some long-gone icons at Mirogoj Cemetery
A surprisingly popular stop on many of the city tours in Zagreb, this graveyard is home to some of the city’s most famous residents… although they’re perhaps a little quieter these days!
Musicians and mayors, sports stars and astronomers have all been laid to rest here, forming a who’s who of Croatian history.
And the site is even more notable for its incredible diversity, with residents of every religious creed filling the tombs.
Along with all of the famous figures interred here, the grounds themselves are pretty stupendous; it’s almost worth visiting just to wander around and admire the detailed sculptures and many gorgeous domes, with their colorful tiles and copper crowns.
It may be an unorthodox cultural site, but it’s definitely one that will catch your eye!
9 – Absorb the sacred atmosphere of Stone Gate
Another holdover from the medieval era, this gorgeous spot is more than just a visual gem – it’s also a sacred spot!
As the story goes, it was badly scarred during a 1731 fire, but the holy painting of Baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary remained magically undamaged.
This legend has inspired visitors to flock to the site, saying prayers and making wishes within the holy space; if you feel so inclined, you can even stop by and contribute a few requests of your own!
10 – Soak up the performances at the Croatian National Theatre
For over 260 years, the Croatian National Theatre has offered up a vibrant arts calendar for the city to enjoy; and if you really want a good sampler platter of culture, this place delivers!

Shrink and grow in size, peer into kaleidoscopes, or get a little bit of a science fiction feel at one of the best hologram collections in Europe.

18 – Uncover the city’s underground history (literally) in the Grič Tunnel
In true Croatian fashion, even the simplest pedestrian path has a rich and complex legacy!
It was originally built during World War II to act as a secret passageway and bomb shelter, and was later expanded after the conflict to become a warehouse, an unofficial shelter, and even a place for raves!
These days, it serves as one of the town’s most unique cultural centers, its subterranean walls lined with exhibits that chronicle the city’s past, as well as some unique artifacts.
Take some time to fully appreciate the strangeness of the space; the weight of the past lies heavy in its dense walls!
19 – Enjoy the charming Trakoscan Castle
As you journey into the woodlands, you’ll suddenly see the towers of Trakoscan Castle jutting up proudly from a thicket, welcoming visitors just as it has since the 1200s.
And it’s even more impressive once you head inside, where authentic weapons and lovely decorative pieces fill the beautiful halls.
Back on the outside, savor the beauty of the lake and the carefully cultivated gardens, another testament to the elegance of the space.
While this spot is a gem in its own right, you may also get to swing by Varazdin, a lovely little village whose cobbled streets and cafes create a welcoming feel.
And the town isn’t just pretty, but also historic; for a time in the 1700s, it was actually the capital of Croatia!

21 – Ponder the puzzle of Mimara
Packed with ancient objects and phenomenal works of art, Mimara is one of the city’s best museums; but it’s the intriguing story behind the space that makes it one of the most fascinating things to do in Zagreb!
The collection came from the institution’s namesake, Ante Topic Mimara, who was rumored to have stolen another man’s identity, and was once a close friend of the brutal dictator Tito.
While the man himself was controversial, the works themselves are even more so; it’s widely believed that he stole many of them during the Second World War, and outright forged countless others.
Whether the pieces – including many said to have been made by the Old Masters – are real is still somewhat up for debate; but that sense of ambiguity, along with the presence of some genuine artifacts, is part of the novelty.
22 – Indulge your outdoorsy side with some hiking
From gentle forested paths to overlooks that show all the best of the nearby valleys and towns, the hiking around here is simply superb!
Explore the marvelous landscapes just a short distance from the capital, which show off the quieter, more bucolic side of the country.
Head out to the Samobor Hills and discover the remains of castles and winding paths, or shimmy up the remarkable Klek Mountain to enjoy amazing valley vistas.

There are some amazing prehistoric artifacts here, and believe it or not, they were excavated at the exact spot where the museum sits today!
And there are plenty of other artifacts and displays as well, covering the political, economic, and cultural legacies of this amazing town.
Browse through old photographs, admire the distinctive markings of handmade cups and vessels from the medieval era, or check out some cool paraphernalia from the many civic clubs that have flourished here over the years.

24 – Sink your teeth into food tours

It was actually built specifically to host giant exhibitions and artistic events, and for nearly 100 years, it’s done just that, hosting nearly every Croatian artist of note from the 20th century.
Even in the midst of war and turmoil, it maintained its status as a cultural icon, hosting hundreds of displays from all of the modern movements as they came and went.
And it still features plenty of great shows today, all housed in a stunning structure that honors those early bohemian days.
26 – Wander around King Tomislav Square
At the juncture of the past and the present, a trip to this charming public area is one of the best things to do in Zagreb if you want to get a deeper view of day to day life here.
The area was named for the first king of Croatia, who was famed for uniting disparate tribes for the first time to fight off invading Hungarians; and you can still see his stone likeness overlooking the scene.
And along with being a great social hub in its own right, the square is also a perfect frame for some of the best local treasures, with the Art Pavilion (see #25) at the edge, and the breathtaking silhouette of Mount Medvednica further out.
Take a breather here and enjoy all of the great sights, as well as the energetic atmosphere!
27 – Watch ancient worlds come to life at the Archaeological Museum
The deep, sometimes mysterious past comes alive in full force at the Archaelogical Museum, where you can spend hours wandering through the endless remnants of past lives.
And this is no simple curiosity cabinet; you’ll encounter some amazingly icons from the early days of the region, such as the Branimir Inscription, which is thought to be the first writing of its kind by any Slavic royal, and is well over a millennium old!
This is also the home of the Eneolithic Dove of Vučedol, a remarkable ceremonial clay pot in the shape of a bird that was believed to have ritualistic importance.
With over 450,000 fantastic items, you’ll have endless opportunities to fall in love with different pieces of the past – and you just might find connections between those far-off times and our own!
28 – Try a wine tasting (or two)
Arguably one of the area’s most scrumptious exports, the local vino is certainly a delight; and the local wine tastings will make it more fun than ever to sample the flavors!
Stop at some gorgeous castles and enjoy a fantasy-like atmosphere to pair with your next glass, or enjoy some charming private excursions to various little wineries around the region.

30 – Soak up the sciences at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum
Arguably one of the country’s most famous native sons, Nikola Tesla’s legacy remains world-famous; and at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, you can dive deeper into the projects and ideas of this prodigious innovator.
You’ll see some of his original pieces on display, along with other technological triumphs and scientific curiosities ranging from models of mines to the oldest steam engine in the region.
Peek into the planetarium, trace the evolution of energy sources over the decades, and learn all about the different triumphs and troubles of different Croatian scientists… including more information about Tesla himself, of course.
