Tucked on the southern side of Wanaka is the historic Wanaka Station Park, which existed long before Wanaka as we know it ever did!
Wanaka Station Park was used previously as a Sheep Station, that was brimming with a variety of different trees, from Douglas firs, huge sequoias, and Himalayan cedars, just to name a few. Today, you can visit Wanaka Station Park, walk through the dense forest, and see these same trees, including the station’s oldest surviving orchard with pears and apples to pick for free!
If you’re on the hunt for your perfect shot of That Wanaka Tree, the Wanaka Station Park is a great place to go to, just make sure to go early as crowds tend to form later in the day.

10 – See the Cardrona Bras Fence for yourself
Only 18 minutes away from Wanaka is one of the most unique sites to check out in New Zealand as a whole, and that is the Cardrona Bra Fence.
As the name might give you a hint, the Cardrona Bra Fence is a fence with several bras that have been hung on since 1998. There are a few rumors flying around stating how this attraction was started, many saying that it was a group of local women, however, one thing is for certain, it’s an attraction that has caused controversy, and even has broken records and raised money for causes.
You can visit the famed bra fence at its new location near the Cardona Horse Trekking and Quadbiking company. If you feel inclined, you can leave a bra, or even ship one! You can also leave a donation for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Research.
11 – Get panoramic views from Mount Iron Track
Grab your best hiking shoes for a walk around the famed Mount Iron Track, a popular walking trail that loops around the top of Mount Iron, only a 2-minute drive from Wanaka.
The trail is a 4.5-kilometer loop that takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete and offers incredible views with important landmarks to take note of, such as The Pisa range, the Upper Clutha Basin, and the Southern Alps.
The views are incredible and if you’re looking for an easy-to-moderate trail to walk while in Wanaka, this one is it! Be sure to bring some water, and SPF if you’re visiting in the summer, and in the winter, bring layers and good track shoes as the paths can have ice and mud. The path is dog friendly for those traveling with pets!
12 – Feel the adrenaline on a jet boat cruise on the Clutha River
Hit Clutha River on an exciting jet boat, the second longest river in New Zealand, and the longest one in the South Island. Let the wind blow through your hair, as you surround yourself with the beauty of the Southern Alps and the wondrous New Zealand bush.
While on your water adventure, you’ll hear more fascinating facts about the local ecology and nature from your guide, like why the water is so blue and emerald green and where the name of the river came from. Only 12 minutes away from Wanaka, the whitewater park is the place that for once, is not the most beginner-friendly place to start your kayaking lessons or try out surfing for the first time.
So if you consider yourself a bit more experienced with surfing, kayaking, or rafting this is the adventure for you! The park has 2 different natural waves that create wild momentum, from bouncy and soft to a bit more rambunctious.
There is no equipment rental available, so if you want to take advantage of the waters, make sure to bring your own equipment.

25 – Get a bird’s eye view of Wanaka from the Rob Roy Track
Bring your best hiking shoes and gear up for a trailblazing adventure through the scenic Rob Roy Track, getting views of the beautiful grasslands, mountains, Lake Wanaka, and much more.
The track is only 8 minutes away from Wanaka, and it gives you the opportunity to see the sights of glaciers, stunning cliffs, waterfalls, and much more on a 10-kilometer roundtrip trail. The whole walk takes around 3-4 hours long.

Skiing is hands down one of the most popular activities to do at the resort, and whether you know how to ski or not, it’s no reason not to enjoy the incredible winter activities at the resort! Enjoy a ski lesson, if you’re a newbie, or hit the slopes if you’re ready! Choose from a day pass starting only at $160!
If you’re visiting in any other season, enjoy mountain carting, the stunning alpine gondola ride, or simply walking and hiking the beautiful mountain trails.
The resort has a Wanaka bus service that runs from June-September and starts at $40 NZD for a roundtrip journey.
35 – Do some exciting mountain carting
Mountain Carting is calling your name if you’re looking for an activity where you can combine three-wheeled go-karts, the mountains, and an adrenaline-pumping mountain activity to do on a sunny day in Wanaka.
A relatively new activity, mountain carting is a 2-hour carting activity that involves going to the top of the mountains of Wanaka via a ski lift, until arriving at the tracks, watching a safety briefing, and getting geared up for your thrilling ride.
The starter price begins at $145 NZD per adult, and it includes all the safety gear, however, before arriving, make sure to come dressed appropriately in covered footwear and warm clothing to layer up with.
Children 8 years and older can ride on their own cart, but children younger than that can ride with an adult. A fee of $25 NZD may be applicable.
36 – Make it a movie night at Cinema Paradiso
Sit back and enjoy a movie at the Cinema Paradiso, a 3-screen, modern movie theater equipped with comfortable and luxurious seating, a full-service bar and cafe, and for those with extra appetite, a restaurant too.
The small and cozy theater has an ambiance that makes you feel as if you’re watching a movie at a friend’s house, if that friend, of course, had their own chef at their disposal ready to make anything. If it’s a rainy night, a visit to the Cinema Paradiso is one of the best things to do in Wanaka.

If you came to Wanaka to ski, then you must also check out Treble Cone Ski Area, considered to be the largest ski mountain resort closest to Wanaka, in the southern island.
Blaze your way through the fresh, powdery snow on the well-maintained runs, with the longest one being 4 kilometers. If you’re someone with a bit of experience or not, there are a few intermediate trails and a few expert-level trails, so you can literally choose your adventure. Ride the longest vertical rise ski lift, with an elevation of 1960 meters high, offering incredible views of the mountain, right before jumping off!

A steady drive up the rugged mountains of Wanaka? Yes, please! Join a jeep tour that will give you access to the remote areas of Wanaka’s landscape, while taking in some of the beautiful local animals that roam freely through the mountain farmland.
On your journey, you’ll have access to some of the most remote, and hardly touristed areas of Wanaka, where nature is hardly touched and where you’ll see herds of sheep and cattle roaming freely.
As you galavant on your safari jeep experience, the tour guide will shed some light on the cultural and historical stories of the land, and some of the first pioneers of Wanaka.
Along the way, you’ll stop for the best photo ops, as well as for drinks. Best of all, you can enjoy the tour in two slots during the day, either in the mornings or afternoons.
42 – Take a hike through Isthmus Peak
26 minutes away from Wanaka is Isthmus Peak, a stunning 15-kilometer trail, that takes a little under 7 minutes to complete. Though the trail is a bit on the challenging side, many locals and visitors frequent the trail for its incredible views over Lake Wanaka and the snow-capped mountains.
The trails are perfect whether you want to go hiking, mountain biking, or running for those who want a little extra resistance. The trails are ideal to be visited between January-November. Locals warn that March to May is hunting season, therefore it’s important to stay extra vigilant.
Also, be warned that the weather changes frequently, so be sure to bring layers of clothing that are waterproof and windproof.
43 – See the large steam engines at Wheels At Wanaka
Vintage cars, trucks, and tractors, oh my! Make a trip to Wheels At Wanaka, an entertainment venue with up to 50 acres of monster trucks and other large steam engines of all different colors, including dirt bikes, and ATVs doing all sorts of tricks!
Watch tractor and truck pulls, classic car shows, steam engines, and steel wheel tractors, and a parade of exotic cars take center stage at the venue, entertaining people of all ages, from the youngest people in your travel group to the older!
