1 – Explore the Council Square
Doused in centuries worth of history, Council Square is the heart and soul of Brasov, overflowing with several things to do there alone.
Check out the main building, Casa Sfatului, a beautiful town-hall building that dates back to 1420. The building is an interesting one to look at, as you can make out the different architectural styles, indicating the lengthy construction process.
Today, you can enter to see some of the interesting exhibits, both permanent and temporary. You can also pop into the Brasov History Museum inside Casa Sfatului to learn more about Brasov’s history, and the different historical happenings that defined Brasov.
Walk the historic Strada Republicii, which used to be a bustling merchant square. Today, it is still as lively as before as a pedestrian walkway with shops and restaurants.
2 – Visit the historical and beautiful Beth Israel Synagogue
Step inside the beautiful Beth Israel Synagogue, which was built by the first Jewish community in Brasov, as early as the 15th century.
The synagogue boasts a Neo-Gothic architectural style, with a few Moorish influences. Its windows have some symbolism to take note of, including the coat of arms of 32 Israeli settlements, and much more.
It is known as a neological synagogue, a branch of Judaism that supports the continued evolution of beliefs in Judaism.

3 – Take a walking tour of Old Town

5 – Walk around a historic building from the 1600s at the Museum of Urban Civilization
Located in the famous Council Square, the Museum of Urban Civilization is a fascinating space where you can visit to learn about the huge importance that Brasov played as a gateway city between the east and the west, as well as local history.
The 4-story museum, which is housed inside a historic building from the 1600s, shares with visitors a great introduction to local culture, traditions, and beliefs, which helps with understanding the city better.
Gaze at the examples of original murals, textiles, artifacts, and restored items from archaeological sites nearby.
The museum is organized in chronological order, starting with ancient Brasov on the ground floor, up to modern times on the 4th floor. Some rooms inside have been restored to their original design as well!

6 – Visit Catherine’s Gate, one of the only surviving medieval gates
Built in 1559, Catherine’s Gate was built as a defense from floods and invasions. It was named after the St. Catherine’s Monastery which used to stand where the gate was built. Back then, it was one of the only gates through which Romanians could enter the walled-in city.
Take a look at the incredible details of the gate, like the 4 small corner peaks (turrets), which gave symbolized judicial power. You’ll also see near the entrance the city’s coat of arms, with Brasovian symbolism.
After multiple accidents, fires, and destructions, the gate still survives and has been restored to its original glory, so make sure to bring your camera to pose in front of such a historical sight.
While you’re visiting Catherine’s Gate, visit the other nearby gate, Șchei Gate, and The Weaver’s Bastion, a medieval guard tower.
7 – Get your adventure on at Adventure Park
Looking for some innocent, competitive fun? Hit up Adventure Park Brasov, a fun outdoor obstacle course game located 11 minutes away from Brasov.
Test your reflex, curiosity, and strength, and most of all have fun, as you take on the obstacle games situated in the beautiful Romanian forests. Choose from the 16 different trails, and activities, all divided based on age and height.
With something for everyone, from children to adults, everyone is bound to have a great time! Children ages 5-10 can enjoy some mini off-roading in a 30-minute, safe jeep obstacle course, while the parents will enjoy zip lining across the lake some 200 meters in the air.

8 – Pop into the fascinating Hărman Fortified Church
Located in the village of Harman, 10 kilometers from Brasov is the medieval Hărman Fortified Church, dating back to the 13 century. The name “fortified” comes from the fact that the church was a fortification that was used in defense when armies of enemies would attack.
On the inside, the church looks like most other churches, except for the 12-meter-high walls, and other unique peculiarities.
You’ll learn about the reason why the church became a fortification, and just how many people would be able to hide and keep safe from sieges and wars.
The church still has remnants of painted iconography on the walls, including an image of St. Nicholas, to who this church was dedicated. The church is open from April-October daily. Admission starts at USD 2.50 for adults.
9 – Hop on a horseback riding tour
Escape the crowded streets of Brasov and head towards the peace and quiet of nature on a quaint horseback riding tour.
Take in the beauty of the mountainous landscapes, and castles in the far distance when you trek past quaint small villages near Brasov. On your journey, you’ll have a few pit stops at some notable landmarks, including a few fortified churches.
Some horseback riding experiences include a traditional picnic lunch and a return on an air-conditioned bus after dropping off the horses at the stable.

10 – Step into the Middle Ages at Weaver’s Bastion Fortress
Weaver’s Bastion Fortress is located 11 minutes away from the center of Brasov and served as a guard tower that was built to protect the walled-in city.
Inside, you can check out the beautiful courtyard and a view of the thick walls that withstood the test of time, as well as attacks from enemies. There is a museum inside the fortress for a small fee, that includes archery games and medieval-themed puzzles and activities.

Since the early 1900s, the fortress has hosted a variety of cultural activities and events, including acoustic concerts and opera.

11 – Get a taste of Medieval life inside Brasov Citadel
Located 18 minutes from downtown Brasov is the Brasov Citadel, a 15th-century defense fortress.
Situated on the top of a hill, it was considered a very important defense with great visibility.
Inside, you will see that there are cultural events that take place from time to time, like medieval festivals and temporary exhibitions worth checking out. There is also a restaurant inside, for those who want to try a taste of traditional Roman cuisine while at the fortress.
More than anything, you’ll quickly see that the sights from the fortress are undeniably incredible. You can see the Old City, the mountains in the distance, and a few sights like the Black Church from the windows of the fortress.
Entry into the fortress is free, and open most days of the year.
12 – See the largest organ in Romania inside the Black Church
Known as one of the biggest medieval churches east of Vienna, the Black Church is by far one of the most fascinating items to add to your list of things to do in Brasov.
The 14th-century Black Church is still in repair from a monumental fire that took over the city in the 18th century. However, visitors are still able to step in and see for themselves what’s inside.
On the outside, you’ll notice the Gothic architecture style, one of the best in Brasov. On the inside, you’ll see the largest mechanical organ in the country, as well as a large collection of Turkish carpets.

13 – Spend a rainy day inside Leisure Center Poiana Brasov
Perfect for a rainy day, enjoy the indoor activities awaiting you at Leisure Center Poiana Brasov! From bowling, mini hockey, mini football, and more, you’ll find that there is a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.
Located beside the Bradul ski slope, the Leisure Center Poiana Brasov has tons of activities for kids to cut loose with, as well as adults like playing billiards, bowling, walking into the exhibition spaces, and much more!

14 – Take a look at the first printing press in Romania at the First Romanian School Museum
The First Romanian School Museum located in Șcheii Brașovului, was a school that students would attend to learn Romanian. It is situated inside the historic St. Nicholas Church, and since 1583, was used as an education space for Romanian students.
It’s believed that the school taught approximately 1,730 students in total, and they came from all different areas near Brasov.
Today, the school has converted into a museum, where you can see examples of classroom items and other educational artifacts. Check out examples of Slavic and Romanian bibles, a possible version of a student magazine, as well as Romania’s first printing press.
Admission into the museum starts at 10 lei for adults and 5 lei for students. The museum is open every day from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
15 – Stroll the lively Nicolae Titulescu Park
Visit the biggest park in Brasov, Nicolae Titulescu Park (Central Park Brasov) standing centrally in the heart of Brasov.
Overflowing with tons of activities and sights to see, the park is the place where locals like to come together, from older people playing chess to younger kids running around and playing in the playgrounds.
Take in the beautifully manicured gardens, surrounding statues, and busts of Romanian historical figures, one of which is the diplomat, Nicolae Titulescu after which the park is named.
Enjoy a stroll around, and see beautiful fountains adorning the pathways, and plenty of benches to take a seat to absorb the scenery.
On certain days, markets and fairs will take over parts of the park, and you can enjoy a little shopping, whether it’s craft or food items.
16 – Seek out some bears at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary
Visit the largest brown bear sanctuary in Europe, the Libearty Bear Sanctuary. The sanctuary is a total of 69 hectares, and it is located in the Carpathian Mountains. Since its start in the 90s, the sanctuary has been able to rescue, heal, and release over 100 brown bears.
Bears in Romania suffered a great deal at the hands of greedy people, from those who kept them in cages to attract people to their shops and restaurants, to those who used them for pure entertainment.
Today the sanctuary, which has been rated highly by many organizations, is a great place to visit and contribute any help, as you get to observe these beautiful creatures.
The sanctuary can only be visited with a guided tour, so make sure to check them out.
17 – Get impressive views of the city at the Black Tower
Known in Brasov as Turnul Negru, the Black Tower is an important monument in Brasov that is located on Warthe Hill, west of Brasov.
The 11 meters high tower was built in the 15th century, as one of the first defense towers in Brasov. Interestingly enough, the name comes from the fact that the tower was struck by lightning in 1559.
Today, you can step inside to view exhibits of items made by tailors and blacksmiths of the medieval ages.
You can also climb up the 4 floors using the narrow wooden ladder to the top of the tower.
You’ll arrive at the modern glass roof, and see through it some of the extraordinary views of the city, including the green Tampa Mountain, and the cable car that passes right through it.
18 – Check out the secret hiding rooms inside the Prejmer Fortified Church
Only 22 minutes from Brasov, in Prejmer county, is the Prejmer Fortified Church built between 1212-1213. Originally settled by German Teutonic Knights, the church was later taken over by the Transylvanian community.
The church which went from Roman Catholic to Lutheran became a safe haven for the families of the village during wars. Each family had a specific room assigned to them if the village would be under attack.
The fortified church is today a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can visit to check out the thick walls, the secret hiding rooms, and the church inside. You’ll also be able to see the impressive battlements on the outside of the church and learn about how they were constructed.

19 – See local Romanian animals at Zoo Brasov
Visit over 380 different animal species from the red-bellied piranha to the predatory reef fish, white lions, European deers, and even a blood python when you visit the Zoo Brasov Park.
The 25-acre zoo is located in the southeastern region of Brasov, in the middle of the dense Romanian forest. Part of the zoo also includes a planetarium, and aquarium since its recent renovations in 2017.
Check out their online calendar to see if you can visit the zoon on International Day of Primates (September 1st) or on International Red Panda Day (September 21st) when the zoo hosts some fun events and learning activities mostly geared towards younger children.
Tickets are sold online and in person, although the zoo suggests buying online to avoid issues at the door.
20 – Try to walk Strada Sforii, the narrowest street in Eastern Europe
Originally used as a shortcut for the firefighters to get from one side of the city to the other, today, the Stada Sforii is a famous avenue known for officially being the most narrow street in all of Eastern Europe.
To get to Strada Sforii (also known as Rope Street) it’s only a 5-minute walk from Council Square, in the direction of Schei Gate.
The street is decorated with murals and messages on both sides of the wall, however, locals and past visitors recommend looking above you frequently for pigeon droppings! The narrow street measures around 44 inches wide at its narrowest point, and 80 meters in total length.
That means when someone is oppositely walking towards you, you will just have to alternate to let each other pass through!
21 – Tuck inside the fascinating Valea Cetatii Cave
Visit what feels like a secret underground world at Valea Cetatii Cave. The cave is believed to have been formed by the force of the water over time, which created galleries and interestingly shaped limestone figures.
Though the cave was officially discovered in 1949, it wasn’t until 2010 that there was a proper excavation process to build what is now the tourist-friendly Valea Cetatii Cave.
Utilizing materials and dozens of LED lights designed not to disturb the local ecology, various staircases, and walkways welcome visitors to see the grandeur of the cave from inside. Take a look at the naturally formed cave, including the natural limestone figures,
Other than viewing the beautiful stalactites, and stone figures, you can even attend a Brasov Philharmonic concert right inside the cave!
22 – See Saint Nicholas Church – one of the oldest churches in Transylvania
Peek inside the Saint Nicholas Church, considered to be one of the oldest churches in Transylvania, which houses a few interesting facts and pieces.
Dating back to 1392, the original church was built completely out of wood. However, it underwent a renovation in 1495 when the church was rebuilt with stone.
Inside you’ll see impressive examples of frescoes, many of which were painted by the famous Mişu Popp. There is a wall that goes around the church grounds, which was a common practice for churches at the time in case of attacks.
Within the churchyards, you’ll find the First Romanian School, a statute of Coresi an editor who printed the first few Romanian language books, a cemetery where Nicholas Titulescu is buried, and a library with church archives.
23 – Go skiing at Poiana Brasov
Hit the slopes at Poiana Brasov, with over 13.7 kilometers of slopes and 5 kilometers of ski routes to choose from! At an elevation of 941 and 1,783 meters, Poiana Brasov is a local favorite winter escape.
At the slopes, you’ll also find scenes of beautiful lakes, meadows, and snow-capped mountains everywhere you look, and for fun, there are lots of restaurants, cafes, and bars, perfect to tuck into and heat up.
Whether you go for the day, or you take a weekend-long getaway, there are many cottages, guesthouses, and villas ready for your arrival.
You can book a skiing lesson, or hit the slopes right away with a tour that will take you from your hotel, all the way up to the slopes of Brasov for the day.
24 – Discover the inside of Peles Castle
Peles Castle is located a little over an hour from Brasov, and it is considered to be the first European castle to have electricity, with its own power plant in 1884.
The castle was the residence of former King Carol I of Romania and his family, in which his son King Carol II was born.
Inside, check out the restored castle, designed in the way in which the King used to live, with some original furniture. Some exhibits showcase old weapons and paintings as well.
Another way to take in the grand castle and the nature surrounding it is by booking a panoramic helicopter tour! On the tour, you’ll also see the hidden Sinaia Monastery, a 300-year-old monastery, and a historic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
25 – Take a walk around Lake Noua
Unwind and relax or take a power walk around the beauty of Lake Noua, only a 13-minute drive from the center of Brasov. Filled with tons to see and do, the lake has a beautiful island in the middle, as well as many restaurants and bars for a good time.
No matter the season you visit, there is always something to do. In the summer, you can plan a picnic or hang out by the lake. In the winter, it’s common to see people still going on a winter walk!
What’s true is that many people love to take a scenic walk along the lake, or opt for a countryside hike up the rugged hills.

26 – Hike up the famous Tampa Mountain
Get incredible sweeping views of Brasov from the mountain tops of Tampa Mountain.
The mountain, which is home to local animals from the black woodpecker, the Ural owl, and the Eurasian nuthatch, is a favorite hike amongst locals to get a clear view of the city.
The hike takes around 1 hour one way to get to the top, and the views from up there are truly beautiful. You can see pretty much all the major sights from Council Square, to the different fortifications and gates.
Get your picture with the Brasov sign, which was placed there after the city was called Stalin City during the Communist period.
If you’re too tired to walk back down, hop on the scenic cable car for the ultimate view. Tickets start at 16 lei.
27 – Get panoramic views of Old Town from the White Tower
Similar to the Black Tower, the White Tower is another defense and watchtower that was built to help protect the walled-in city from attacks in the 15th century.
Inside, you can check out the old fireplace, the scenic balconies, museum and even climb up to the top like the guards used to do with the stone staircase, and get wide views of the area nearby, including the Old Town.
The museum houses old artifacts from the weaponry used to protect the city back then, to objects that were found inside the watchtower.
Climbing to the top of the watchtower is not for the faint of heart, however, as the staircase is very narrow.
Tickets to enter the White Tower are 7.00 lei for adults and 2.00 lei for children.
28 – Walk through the Șchei Gate
Known locally as Poarta Șchei, the Șchei Gate is located right next to the famous Catherine’s Gate, only 5 minutes away from Old Town.
The purpose of the gate was so that Romanians, who during the 13th-17th centuries could not live within the walled-in city, would pay a toll to pass through to work inside the city. At the time, Romanians had to live in the Șhei district, just outside the gates.
Make sure to stop by the historical district of Shei, where you can see remnants of the history of the Romanian community who lived there during the Saxon rule.
Slightly different from Catherine’s Gate, the Șchei Gate was built to allow traffic through the middle and 2 smaller arches for pedestrians. The gate boasts a beautiful and classic style.
29 – Plan a trip to Transylvania
Make your way to Transylvania, only a 1.5-hour bus ride from Brasov, where you can explore the city and nature in one! Explore the city’s famous sights, from Dracula’s Castle to the Viscri Saxon Fortified Church, the dozens of medieval castles, and so much more!

31 – Experience a scenic hike through Piatra Craiului National Park
Plan a nature escape to Piatra Craiului National Park, a wonderous park with glacier lakes, and the longest and highest limestone ridge in the country.
Located in the southern Carpathian mountains, the main activity to do here is hike, and locals and visitors enjoy taking a few hours to breathe in the fresh mountain air for a bit.
One of the easiest ways to plan a hike to the national park is to book a hiking tour to Piatra Craiului National Park.

32 – Admire Romanian artwork inside Brasov Art Museum
Located across the street from Central Park is a must-stop visit for art lovers, the Brasov Art Museum.
Gawk at the impressive works of art inside the museum, much of which are created by Romanian artists, or are works of art that have to do with Romania or Brasvov.
You’ll appreciate the organization of the artwork, as it’s categorized in a way to follow the progression of art as early as the Saxon period, all the way to after the war.
The museum houses over 100 different works of art in its 6 rooms, ranging from paintings to sculptures, drawings, and more.
The museum is open throughout the year, with special summer and winter hours and programming.
Entry into the museum is 50 lei, and tours are available for an additional cost.
33 – Learn about Solomon’s Rocks
Take a walk through Solomon’s Rocks, and learn about the interesting legends that haunt this natural space.
Only an 8-minute drive from Brasov city center, Solomon’s Rocks are located specifically on the southern edge of the Schei district, near the Scheiu River. Since the early 20th century, excavators have found remnants of what appears to look like traces of a fortress.
Many locals have concluded that the rocks left behind have something to do with the legend of Solomon, a Hungarian king who was cursed to die, and fell into an abyss. This caused the mountain to break in half, therefore creating the rocks.
Locals enjoy taking in the peaceful sounds of the creek water hitting the rocks, as well as hiking, or even mountain biking nearby.
34 – Drive down the Transfagarasan Highway, one of the most incredible roads in Brasov
Ready for some seriously beautiful scenery? Rent a car, or find someone with one and drive through the iconic Transfagarasan Highway.
Featured in the media locally and internationally, this road is longer than 150 kilometers, and at its highest point, it reaches 1,042 meters.
The stunning views include that of Lake Balea, nature-covered mountains, and stunning valleys. It looks like an image taken out of a postcard!
The road was built in the 70s to create a shortcut through the mountains for soldiers to get to northern Romania faster.
Today, both locals and visitors enjoy driving down the paved, topsy-turvy road, which isn’t dangerous to drive through. Throughout the journey, you’ll also catch views of castles, and lake homes, as you zig-zag through the mountain.

35 – Check out Rasnov Fortress, one of the best-kept fortresses in Romania
The Rasnov Fortress is a defense building that dates back to 1225 and was built to offer safe refuge to locals in times of war.
Situated on an isolated scenic hilltop, surrounded by rolling green hills and dense forests, the fortress is not only beautiful to look at but also has impressive form on the inside as well.
To visit, you can either take a taxi and then walk up to the fortress yourself, or you can take the fun approach and take the cable car to the top for 2.50 lei.
As you explore the grounds, you’ll see a few more stone buildings, that have been restored and offer a wonderfully immersive experience into the earlier years of Romania.

36 – Brace yourself for an adventurous day at Seven Ladders Canyon
