things to do in Mauritius

Situated right in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the lush island nation of Mauritius feels as though it was plucked straight out of a dream; and the more time you spend there, the more amazing treasures you’ll discover!

While it’s technically part of the African continent, the country is famed for its vibrant blend of cultures.

Even in the smallest towns, you’ll find influences from places as far-flung as China, India, France, and Madagascar in a blend of different cuisines, religions, and customs, a relic of the shipping industry and centuries of immigration.

Of course, the great outdoors also play a huge role here; after all, few countries can boast the same distinctive combination of oceanic scenery, tropical forests, gorgeous geological phenomena, and amazing creatures that are rare and valuable in their own right.

So come with us to a land of submerged waterfalls, multi-century migrations, and massive tortoises, as we check out the amazing things to do in Mauritius.

1 – Explore Île aux Cerfs

île aux Cerfs, Mauritius

We’ll start things off with a truly tropical setting… an island off the coast of another island!

Soft pale sands, warm, gentle waters, and a terrific array of classy spots and lively party areas make up the bulk of this charming spot, also known as “Leisure Island.”

While it has a lot of the trappings of popular resorts – from spectacular restaurants to a world-famous golf club -, the area also serves as an outdoor paradise, where you can waterski, parasail, or even hitch a ride aboard a giant inflatable banana… yes, really!

Get a great taste of this beauty and luxury on a boat tour, or linger a little longer and book a stay at the Bubble Lodge, the island’s only resort, where you can relax in your own personal dome and enjoy the peaceful shores around you.

2 – Make a splash at Blue Bay

Blue Bay, Mauritius

Back on the main island, you’ll never be far from an amazing marine encounter… especially when you’re exploring the wonders of Blue Bay!

Sitting on the southeastern coast close to the town of Mahebourg, its tranquility has long made it a draw for both locals and tourists; but it’s the protected ecosystem that really stands out!

Venture into  Blue Bay Marine Park, and you’ll quickly find yourself experiencing an aquatic world like no other; whether you’re cruising around on a glass-bottomed boat or getting even closer with a snorkeling tour, you’ll feel like a proper merperson as you come in contact with the incredible creatures and corals of the deep!

Schools of fish in every shade and style dart in and out of pristine reefs, offering a wonderful glimpse into the treasures the ocean holds.

It’s an unbeatable place to spend the afternoon!

3 – Soak up the scenery (and the swimming opportunities) at Rochester Falls

Rochester Falls, Mauritius

Rest assured, there’s lots to enjoy inland as well, including a particularly scenic hike and swimming spot that’s even starred in several movies!

Named for the male lead in the classic novel Jane Eyre,  this gorgeous set of waterfalls – the widest in the entire country! – is tucked into the Savanne district, on the southern part of the island,

And while it does take a short trek to get there, the views make it all worthwhile!

Choose between a walking or driving path, and make your way through sugarcane, past cemeteries, and around the dense foliage as you follow the Savanne River to your breathtaking destination, where the cascading waters and the powerful square stone formations surrounding them create a compelling and spectacular sight.

Once you’re there, you can go for a dip in the pools below, or just sit on the shore and enjoy the gorgeous scenery that has served as a backdrop for several Bollywood movies.

4 – Bask on Bel Ombre beach

Bel Ombre beach, Mauritius

Looking like the postcard version of a perfect beach day, Bel Ombre provides the very best of the island’s shoreline for visitors to enjoy at length.

Towering casuarina trees and stunning strands of foliage frame the coast itself, with the water offering an equally inviting setting to relax in.

Of course, you can easily spend the whole day unwinding here; but the area also offers plenty of spectacular water sports, from kayaking and speed boating to scuba diving.

And if you want to take things to the next level, you can even book some kitesurfing lessons, and learn how to zip across the surface of the water… and above it!

For even more coastal fun, head to the neighboring St Felix Public Beach, a lovely secluded spot where you can enjoy the same excellent swimming and wildlife-viewing opportunities, minus the crowds!

5 – Meet the marvelous plants at SSR Botanical Garden

SSR Botanical Garden, Mauritius

Packed with flora of every shape and size, SSR Botanical Garden is not only the oldest space of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, but also one of the most amazing!

Built in 1770 by the renowned horticulturist Pierre Poivre, this 91 acre paradise is home to some spectacular specimens from around the world, including some massive water lilies that look almost prehistoric!

Along with plenty of native specimens, the gardens feature samples from many of the neighboring islands in the Indian Ocean, as well as specimens from Asia, Africa, and Central America.

The eclectic collection includes 85 palm tree species, medicinal herbs, and many of the spices that once made this region such a popular trading hub.

And history fans will marvel at the many trees that were planted by visiting dignitaries from all over the globe, from Robert Mugabe and Indira Gandhi to Princess Margaret.

Stop by and lose yourself in the wonderful world of plants!

6 – Visit Les 7 Cascades

Les 7 Cascades, Mauritius

Also known as Tamarind Falls, this natural wonder showcases the sort of gorgeous sights that are unique to this nation… including the ones you’ll see on your journey to get there!

As you hike into the area where these marvelous waters flow, you’ll get to enjoy an iconic bit of Mauritian scenery, alternating between basalt stones and more jungle-like paths.

And of course, there are the falls themselves, which are scattered at various points along the trail like a series of prizes for walkers.

Take some pictures of the tumbling currents before you, then head to the natural pools for a refreshing swim.

This expedition generally takes half a day, and while there are some steep and challenging portions, you don’t need to be an expert hiker to set out on the trail – just bring good shoes and an enthusiasm for the great outdoors!

And if you’re feeling even more adventurous, you can get more into the rugged landscape all along the way with some of the best canyoning in the country!

Scurry along rock faces, swim through the calmer sections of water, and make thrilling descents through the steady beat of the descending spray; it’s a truly immersive experience in one of the island’s best natural features!

7 – See the treasures of days gone by at the Blue Penny Museum

Blue Penny Museum, Mauritius

For all its incredible natural offerings, there are also tons of amazing cultural and artistic things to do in Mauritius; and no trip would be complete without celebrating this fine heritage at the Blue Penny Museum!

The atmosphere here is at once intimate and expansive, deeply connected to the country itself and the larger political and social forces that have forever shaped it; and the result is a collection of masterpieces and artifacts that will draw you into the nuances of the nation.

You can dive into the evolution of Port Louis, the nation’s capital and largest city, as told through paintings and historic maps; or browse through the quirky, fascinating stamps that once formed the backbone of the postal industry.

Or explore some more unique themes, such as the love story of Paul and Virginie, a fictional couple whose great romance formed the main plot of one of Mauritius’ most famous novels.

From the age of discovery to impressive artistic legacies, this place truly has it all!

8 – Tour the Bois Cheri Tea Factory

Bois Cheri Tea Factory, Mauritius

The lush climate here isn’t just nice for visitors; it’s also a perfect home for tea plants!

And with a Bois Cheri Tea Factory tour, you can learn all about how this iconic crop is grown, harvested, and turned into remarkable cupfuls beloved the world over.

Located along the island’s somewhat more rural southern coast, this tea plantation is one of the largest and most influential in the country, where the leaves are still carefully picked by hand. (It’s worth noting that the main harvesting takes place early in the mornings, and that the peak season for this process is from October to March).

The coolest part is the combination of past and present in one space; while you’ll get a wonderful in-depth look at the long history of tea-growing on the island courtesy of the on-site museum, you can also see the whole process taking place right before your eyes, as the plants are gathered and processed into machines.

And of course, you’ll get a chance to sample the famous beverages, including the famous mint and vanilla variants.

There’s an amazing history in every cup!

9 – Play with reality at Curious Corner of Chamarel

Curious Corner of Chamarel, Mauritius

Your feet are on the ceiling.

You have a dozen clones staring back at you.

Every corner of every room is filled with tilting, melting, twisting objects.

Don’t worry, you’re not having a bad trip… you’ve just entered Curious Corner of Chamarel!

Smack dab in the middle of Chamarel – a lovely little village most famous as the home of the Seven Colored Earths (see #58) -, this quirky attraction lays with art and the senses, creating a wide assortment of optical illusions for visitors to enjoy.

When you’re not twisting through the mirror maze or happily ignoring the laws of physics, you can stop by the Ames Room and watch your size change depending on where you stand, or amuse yourself with the many unusual art installations scattered throughout the space.

It’s wacky, wonderful fun for all ages!

10 – Go dolphin watching

dolphin watching in Mauritius

Among the many amazing animals that call this area home, few are more charismatic than a certain sea creature often spotted on the waves; so it’s little wonder that dolphin watching is one of the most popular things to do in Mauritius!

Set out to sea with your knowledgeable captain, and keep an eye out for spinners and bottlenoses as they play around in the currents.

The best part about observing these dynamic, intelligent mammals is the variety of experiences you’ll get; you never know just what escapades they’ll get up to as you sail by!

And while watching them go by is cool enough, you can also get even closer with a guided swim!

Believe it or not, dolphins will often take an interest in nearby humans, and there’s nothing quite like meeting them in their own world to make for a magical day.

Strap on a snorkel and swim alongside the cavorting critters, while your guide points out different behaviors and unique attributes of your new aquatic friends.

11 – Pay tribute to the past at the Slave Route Monument

Slave Route Monument, Mauritius

While Mauritius’ multicultural blend has resulted in many fantastic things for the country, there are also some darker elements to its origins; and at the base of Le Morne Mountain, there’s a beautiful, sobering tribute to one of the longest, grimmest chapters in the island’s history.

For centuries, the island was a major hub in the global slave trade, perfectly positioned to transport human cargo all over Asia, Africa, and even all the way to Europe and the Caribbean.

According to local lore, one of the grimmest consequences of this industry came to fruition at this tall peak, where it was said that hundreds of escaped captives leapt to their deaths rather than face a life of slavery.

Sitting in the shadow of those imposing cliffs, this simple, powerful sculpture garden features works poignantly depicting enslaved individuals from various countries, all at different points in their journey, and each facing a different aspect of dehumanization.

It’s a crucial part of the country’s story, and one well worth confronting during your visit.

12 – Make some new (old) friends at Francois Leguat Reserve

Francois Leguat Reserve, Mauritius

When you’re ready for a very different glimpse into the past, you can meet some of the island’s oldest and coolest residents… giant tortoises!

One of the country’s most distinctive creatures, these geriatric reptiles are some of the most popular inhabitants of Francois Leguat Reserve; but there’s so much more to see in this pristine ecosystem!

The tiny island of Rodrigues, just east of the mainland, is where you’ll find this remarkable reserve, and as you discover its endless gems, you can get a real feel for what life was like in this land before humans showed up.

Along with the tortoises, which once roamed this area in massive numbers, this is a wonderful place to admire some of the native plants, which are being gradually reintroduced to help recreate the original forests.

You can even get a taste of life underground as you delve into nine spectacular limestone caves, including Grande Caverne, with its epic stalagmites and stalactites that provide a peek into the primordial past.

The whole space is a triumph of ecological conservation, and a must for nature fans!

13 – Explore the watery worlds around Belle Mare

Belle Mare, Mauritius

As one of the country’s most prominent resort areas, Belle Mare has become something of an international luxury getaway; but the village itself has a much older and fascinating history stretching back hundreds of years.

The name itself gives away some of the European influences; French for “beautiful sea,” it refers to the stunning waters that surround the village, which have long drawn international and local visitors.

Over the years, the area has blossomed into a place of relaxation, with phenomenal hotels and endless adventures in the great outdoors.

Take a quick jaunt to the nearby town of Quatre Cocos, home to such thrilling experiences as the Kashima Solar Sea Walk, where you can strap on a diving helmet and walk along the floor of the ocean, feeding fish and observing the world around you in all of its different shades and moods.

And if you want to get even more into aquatic life, this is also an excellent area to embark on some scuba diving tours!

14 – Hang around Mont Choisy Beach

Mont Choisy beach, Mauritius

As one of the nation’s longest beaches, Mont Choisy offers something for everyone, from the history geek to the lounge lizard.

Youngsters will love frolicking on the shore and daring into the gentle waves, while adults can sunbathe, picnic, or try out a few local sports.

Ride horses along the shore, play a bit of soccer, or keep working on those diving skills; and when you’re ready for some variety, pop over to nearby Trou aux Biches Beach, where gorgeous scenery combines with a tranquil village atmosphere to create a truly relaxing getaway.

And of course, this is a great area to practice your picture-taking skills… after all, you couldn’t ask for a better background!

15 – Get a little wild on Île Plate

Île Plate, Mauritius

The name means “Flat Island,” but trust us… this is a place of many dimensions!

North of the main island, this little spot has a big wildlife footprint; you may spot skinks, seabirds, and geckos.

And be sure to venture out in the evening for a glimpse of the famed bat species in the region, including the massive Mascarene flying fox.

This is also a popular option for various boat tours, which often include stops at  Îlot Gabriel, famed for its amazing swimming spots, fantastic sunrises, and incredible camping spots.

16 – Roam into the depths of Bras D’Eau National Park

Bras D’Eau National Park, Mauritius

This stunning stretch of land is another conservation success story; as you wander through its lush environments, you’d scarcely believe that it was all reconstructed from the remains of farmland!

Tragically, much of the country’s original countryside was destroyed during the agricultural booms of the early years; and in 2011, 497.2 hectares (1,228 acres) of land were set aside to help the forests redevelop.

The result is an absolutely stunning piece of wilderness, where you can watch the gradual comeback of a precious landscape in real time as you roam between strands of teak, eucalyptus, and mango trees.

There’s something particularly invigorating about wandering through a forest that will one day be back to its old glory, or sitting beside ponds and swamps as an endless procession of birds fly by.

And while you may see some signs of human activity – from the ruins of old mills to the impressive Mauritius Radio Telescope  -, the ultimate focus is on the natural world, in all its growing, shifting glory.

17 – Explore the stunning Île aux Aigrettes

Île aux Aigrettes, Mauritius

Tea, tortoises, shipwrecks, and sunsets… there’s nothing quite like a trip to Île aux Aigrettes!

The lovely bit of land is best known for Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve, which is home to a unique stretch of dry coastal forest that pairs with eye-catching limestone formations to create a jaw-dropping scene… and that’s before you even meet the local Aldabras, rare skinks, and pink pigeons!

But it’s also a great area to enjoy some fascinating cultural points of interest as well, from sunken vessels to battle sites and the vibrant fields of the Bos Cheri Tea Factory (see #8)

And if you have the time, it’s well worth lingering into the evening, so you can watch the dusk descend over the beautiful mountains.

18 – Learn about the life of letters at the Mauritius Postal Museum

Mauritius Postal Museum

While you may have learned a bit about the country’s mail industry at the Blue Penny Museum (see #7), you can get even more of the stories behind the stamps with a visit to the Mauritius Postal Museum, which celebrates a system that so many of us take for granted.

While it may not sound exciting on the surface, the 200-year history of mail and postage on the island is, of course, part of a larger story of globalization, and the fascinating efforts to improve communication in this somewhat isolated land.

Along with several exhibits charting the country’s evolving communication systems – including postcards and replicas of antique devices  -, the museum features a particularly unique artifact: one of the earliest postage stamps ever created!

Believe it or not, this was the country that first debuted Britain’s colonial version of the ubiquitous design, all the way back in 1847; and as you see it alongside the current crop of fun cards that you can send home, you’ll truly understand the power that each letter holds!

19 – Discover the delights of Île des Deux Cocos

Île des Deux Cocos, Mauritius

Whether you’re looking for a simple, stylish beach day or an adventurous interlude in nature, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Île des Deux Cocos!

This charming, glamorous island is best known as the home of Blue Bay and park (see #2), but it’s also a wonderful spot to snorkel, beachcomb, or stroll through the nearby woods with your family and friends.

And between its staggeringly beautiful shores and its relaxing, welcoming environment, this is a place that encourages exploration and relaxation in equal measure.

20 – Get a taste of city life in Port Louis

Port Louis, Mauritius

If you’re looking for a whole variety of things to do in Mauritius, the streets of Port Louis will welcome you!

As the main urban hub of the country, this is not just the place where you’ll arrive and depart; it’s also a hotbed of cultures old and new, where the chic and the strange perpetually rub elbows.

For starters, the shopping is top-notch; in the city’s many markets and malls, you’ll find endless opportunities to score authentic clothes, decorations, textiles, and knickknacks, with each shop and stall providing its own wealth of treasures.

And the aptly named Central Market is a great place to start, where you can also pick up some more authentic (and tasty) items, including local fruits and spices.

On the educational side of things, you can explore the remarkable Citadelle Fort (also known as Fort Adeleide), a 19th-century fort that’s packed with fascinating details, from basalt stones to aged cannons.

Or check out the simple but powerful St. Louis Cathedral, a simple but impressive Roman Catholic church that has existed in various forms since the 1700s.

And for a peek into the multicultural side of the city, be sure to stop by the vibrant Chinatown neighborhood, which is packed with shops, restaurants, and distinctive historical buildings that still capture the same spirit of the original immigrants back in the day.

And when you combine all of that with some of the best walking tours in Mauritius, you get an unforgettable cosmopolitan destination!

21 – Admire the eye-catching Notre Dame Auxiliatrice

Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, Mauritius

The bright red roof of this Catholic chapel immediately catches the eye, but it’s the dynamic personality and unique background of the place that really make it stand out!

Built right along the beach in 1938, it’s the latest incarnation of another church that bore witness to one of the island’s greatest battles: the clash between British and French forces over control of the island.

While it’s often stood as a monument to the past, the church is very much part of present public life as well; on any given day, you can find weddings and other ceremonies taking place in this lovely spot.

It’s so much more than your average church!

22 – Tour the gorgeous facilities of Saint Aubin

Saint Aubin, Mauritius

From iconic beverages to wonderful walks in the great outdoors, Saint Aubin has it all!

Historic estates and beautiful paths pair perfectly with chic cuisine and fascinating cultural spots, creating an area that offers the full Mauritian experience.

At La Plantation de Saint Aubin, you can explore the local industries of rum, vanilla, and sugar up close.

Or head over to Le Domaine des Aubineaux to enjoy a mellow day amongst local tea plants and beautiful gardens, with a traditional colonial house overlooking the scene.

In these amazing residences, you’ll be able to explore over 200 years of island history, with the personal narratives of the house’s residents intertwined with the larger story of crop cultivation.

And of course, you’ll get plenty of chances to taste their fine products!

23 – Hike around Domaine De L’Etoile

Domaine De L’Etoile, Mauritius

If you’re craving more green during your trip, head to this spectacular region, which blends the rugged natural world with more manicured, elegant landscapes.

Developed in 2002, the space feels like something of a time capsule, with rare creatures moving through rivers, forests, and valleys that look largely unchanged from the earliest eras of human habitation.

Keep an eye out during your trek for banana and cinnamon trees, as well as kestrels, wild boars, and even the occasional deer.

You might even see some of the same beautiful spots that were used to film the 1972 adaptation of the classic book, Paul and Virginia!

After discovering all of the natural delights, stop by the restaurant to enjoy exquisite regional dishes paired with breathtaking views – the perfect capper to your time in this idyllic place!

24 – Cool off with a twist at Splash N Fun Leisure Park

Splash N Fun Leisure Park, Mauritius

When you’re ready for a very different sort of watery adventure – maybe one with a little more adrenaline thrown in -, grab the whole family and head to Splash N Fun Leisure Park, where the rides and the thrills are always on point!

As the country’s largest waterpark, the complex celebrates the nautical side of things with its incredible collection of rides, from the utterly mellow to the wonderfully spine-rattling.

Zoom down the many waterslides, enjoying twists, turns, and drops that will take your breath away.

Or float in the Wave River, where gentle currents send you bobbing around the park in perfect tranquility.

You can also let the kids splash around in the Aquaplay area, or stay dry with various diversions, such as a 5D cinema, bumper cars, and a merry-go-round.

It’s a nice little diversion in the midst of the more refined local attractions!

25 – Enjoy the many adventures of Grand Baie

Grand Baie, Mauritius

Whether you want to dive, shop, snack, or hang out on the coast, you’re sure to find some quality entertainment in Grand Baie!

Like so many of its neighbors, this seaside town boasts some of the best food in the country, with plenty of lovely traditional eateries offering classic dishes like curries, rougaille, and even a local take on pizza!

Amble through the Grand Baie Bazaar, a lively market full of souvenirs and unusual booths; or head to La Cuvette Public Beach, where you can intersperse your swimming time with visits to the nearby food stalls or snorkeling sessions.

And for an even quirkier adventure, embark on a seabob excursion; these little motorized scooters won’t just zip through the water, but beneath the surface, offering an aquatic adventure unlike any other!

This is one town where you can live life full throttle!

26 – Check out the wonders of Bel Ombre Nature Reserve

Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, Mauritius

On this 1,300 hectare (3,212 acre) paradise, the joy isn’t just in the natural offerings… it’s in how you can explore them!

This southern slice of heaven is actually a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, filled with rare endemic species and almost abstract trees that serve as the last bastions of the once fertile plant life.

A guided walk with a ranger is well worth your while, as they can delve even deeper into the beauty and power of the landscape around you.

But if you’d like a somewhat wilder excursion, there are plenty of options for Bel Ombre Nature Reserve tours.

You can embark on a jeep tour to enjoy a rugged safari along forested trails and past jaw-dropping overlooks, with lots of plant and animal sightings along the way.

Or get a little more into the action with some buggy tours, which are smaller and heartier… all the better for tromping through the dirt to see what;s around the next bend!

27 – Step back into the elegant past at Chateau De Labourdonnais

Chateau De Labourdonnais, Mauritius

Jutting out of the jungle in full colonial glory, the weathered but stunning facade of Chateau de Labourdonnais is hard to miss; but be sure to leave some time to get a bit closer and see what’s inside!

While this distinctive monument looks like it was born to be a tourist attraction, it actually spent the first 150 years of its life as part of a local family’s residence!

And when you venture inside, it will seem that hardly any time has passed; each room of the house is perfectly preserved as it would have looked in its prime, down to the furniture and decor.

After spending some time properly immersed in the 1800s, you can ease your transition back to the present with some samples of the jams, juices, and rums produced in the area, or with a scrumptious meal at one of the estate’s excellent restaurants.

28 – Marvel at Pont Naturel

Pont Naturel, Mauritius

It might take a moment to register the impressive site in front of you; but the longer you look, the cooler it gets!

This rock formation creates a natural bridge (hence the name) stretching between two larger structures, with the sea steadily pounding away below.

Indeed, it’s these constant waves that created the spot in the first place; over eons, they slowly eroded the original wall, creating the distinctive spot we see today.

And the spot is all the more intriguing because of the adventurous process to reach it; quad tours will lead you along a bumpy trail through wild terrain, which eventually brings you right to the mighty rock formation yourself.

Be sure to take some novelty pictures with the bridge while you’re there… but use caution!

29 – Cheer for the horses at the Port Louis Race Track

Port Louis Race Track, Mauritius

Want to take in a traditional sport and maybe earn some extra vacation money at the same time?

Then grab your rupees and head to the race track, where you can play the ponies as generations of locals have done.

Since 1812, the track has been a favorite spot for visitors and townsfolk alike, with some of the country’s finest horses getting regularly put through their paces.

Flock to the main stands to join the excitement of the crowd, or shell out for a seat in one of the private boxes, where you can get a taste for the high life as you watch the exciting events of the day.

Framed by the magnificent Moka Mountain Range, the whole site has as much visual appeal as cultural, with some fascinating athletic endeavors thrown in for good measure!

30 – Get better acquainted with the island’s Giant Tortoises

giant tortoises in Mauritius

Alright, time to properly meet those famous shelled citizens!

While various species of massive terrapins can be found around the globe, Mauritius was once home to some of the largest and most vibrant populations in the world; and although the original native species went extinct in the 1700s, there have been numerous efforts in the centuries since to bring new populations of similar creatures to the island.

And it’s still a haven for the reptiles today, with two particularly distinguished species still going strong.

Aldabra tortoises are probably the most iconic; once found throughout the Indian Ocean, they now exist almost solely in the reserves here, such as La Vanille Nature Park (see #38).

But you can also encounter radiated tortoises, a smaller species with distinctive sunburst-like shell patterns that originated in Madagascar before being brought to this island for conservation purposes.

And while these animals are certainly beautiful to behold, it’s their amazing longevity that really makes them famous; both species frequently live past 100, and some have been known to reach almost 200!

There’s nothing quite like coming face to face with animals that have seen a century or more of history pass by… if only they could speak!

31 – Tour a Rhumerie (and get some samples)

rhumerie tour in Mauritius

No island vacation is complete without a hearty bit of rum, and this particular one has some of the best beverages!

Rhumerie tours are some of the coolest things to do in Mauritius, even if you’re not a huge fan of the spirits; after all, they provide plenty of insight into the culture and production process around this fascinating beverage

And as you watch each step and taste the smooth, savory results, you just might find yourself getting more and more attached!

Rhumerie de Chamarel offers some of the most renowned selections in the country, with plants freshly plucked from the plantation.

And you can enjoy similar levels of quality at St. Aubin Rhumerie, where the stunning fields of sugarcane quickly become a delicious drink.

Of course, one of the best aspects of these tours are the rum tastings themselves, where you can compare and contrast light and dark options, different flavors, and the many varieties of this smooth, strong spirit.

32 – Spring into a Skydiving adventure

Skydive Mauritius is the ideal conduit for this adventure, bringing you 10,000 feet above the land for a thrilling jump that sends you hurtling through the atmosphere with glee.

Search for dolphins in Tamarin Bay, then go for a swim at beautiful Crystal Rock, which stands solo in the middle of the water like its own little landmass.

Then it’s time for a round of snorkeling in the sparkling tides of Fond Blanc, where the nearly transparent waters will reveal all manner of colorful sea life to you with perfect clarity.

It’s little wonder that this area is considered one of the region’s greatest gems!

Tamarin River, Mauritius

And it’s also the home of the river of the same name, which winds through the forest in a leisurely manner that’s perfect for canoeing.

Your journey begins at the picturesque Tamarin Bay – home to many of those amazing surf spots, plus frequent dolphin sightings -, and as you paddle, you’ll follow the current further and further inland, gradually losing yourself in a lush world of foliage and bird calls.

You may even spot monkeys making their way through the canopy!

It’s one of the coolest and most peaceful ways to see the natural surroundings up close, with a little bit of adventure thrown in!

But the reserve also protects plenty of other animals as well; along with an abundance of aldabra tortoises, they also host pigs, monkeys, lemurs, and iguanas, plus several types of farm animals.

While you’re here, you can also learn about the natural history of the island, whether you’re admiring the extensive fossil collection or delving into the tragic tale of the dodo’s extinction.

And while you’re in the area, be sure to stop by Gris Gris Beach, where massive waves pummel the sharp, stately cliffs.

You might even spot La Roche Qui Pleure, a rock formation that looks as though it’s crying as the water crashes against it.

39 – See behind the sweetness at L’Aventure du Sucre

L’Aventure du Sucre, Mauritius

Another one of the country’s most prominent industries – and let’s be honest, probably its most delicious – is the sugar trade, which has thrived for centuries.

And with a visit to L’Aventure du Sucre, you can get deep into the history, science, and manufacturing processes of this beloved seasoning.

While the substance itself may be sweet, the story behind it is anything but; this was one of the main driving forces behind the development of the nation’s slave system, as captives were brought in by various European regimes to work the fields.

But despite its dark origins, the industry has evolved countless times over various eras, and is still going strong – in a much more humane form, of course – to this day.

This fascinating, in-depth excursion is one of the best things to do in Mauritius for curious minds and sugar fans alike!

40 – Take a day trip to the rest of Africa at Casela Nature Park

Casela Nature Park, Mauritius

From the minute you arrive at Casela Nature Park, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a Discovery Channel show… with some extra entertainment thrown in!

While the complex is home to many native animals – including Java mouse deer and fruit bats -, it also offers a great cross-section of animals from the mainland continent of Africa, from giraffes and zebras to kudus and white rhinos.

And there’s more to do than just look here!

Hop aboard a camel for a scenic ride, or strap into a zipline and go whizzing through the treetops.

Then it’s time for a bite to eat at the cafe, where you can enjoy the splendor of the different species.

41 – Channel your inner Cousteau at Blue Safari Submarine

Blue Safari Submarine, Mauritius

You may not go a full 20,000 leagues under the sea, but Blue Safari Submarine will certainly give you a blockbuster-worthy adventure!

As the only tourist sub in the Indian Ocean – and one of only a handful on the planet -, these vessels provide a glimpse of the underwater world that most of us can only dream of… no scuba gear required!

Descend 35 meters (115 feet) below the surface, watching different marine zones and amazing plants and animals reveal themselves to you as if by magic.

Everywhere you look, you’ll see something new and amazing; here a twisting and turning batch of coral, there a shipwreck slowly being consumed by the sea.

And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can also try out the subscooter, a two-person vehicle that lets you take the controls for your own unforgettable excursion through the briny blue!

42 – Explore the awe-inspiring landscapes of Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant, Mauritius

Crowned by the stunning Le Morne Brabant Mountain, this peninsula is hard to miss; with its combination of epic scale and beautiful little details, the whole landscape looks like a painting!

The peninsula curves around a spectacular lagoon, which often appears to be bottomless, with its endlessly shifting currents and colors.

The scenery is heavily interspersed with local lore; this is also the area where escaped slaves were rumored to have fled into the woods before jumping to their deaths to evade capture, a heartbreaking legend that you can explore at length at the Slave Route Monument (see #11).

Head a little further out to sea, and you’ll encounter Crystal Rock, a hunk of stone perfectly perched in the middle of the water.

But if you really want to experience the full beauty of the area, you must take an airplane tour!

Once you’re at an elevated vantage point, you’ll be able to truly enjoy the jaw-dropping sight of the currents below, particularly the jaw-dropping vision of the Underwater Waterfalls (see #72).

Back on the ground, head to the famously stunning Le Morne Beach for a bit of relaxation, or maybe some sportier activities – after all, this is often said to be one of the best kitesurfing and windsurfing areas in the country!

43 – Take a breather at Pereybere Beach

Pereybere beach, Mauritius

A longtime favorite on the island, Pereybere beach  is always bustling, offering a nice bit of people-watching alongside the great swim spots!

While the currents here are a little deeper than some neighboring shores, the waves are still calm enough to enjoy over the course of a leisurely beach day.

And when you get hungry, there are tons of great food stalls surrounding the shore; pop out, grab a meal, then enjoy your own little picnic.

And if you prefer a quieter setting with the same lovely atmosphere, head over to the nearby, slightly more secluded Bain Boeuf Public Beach!

44 – Take in multiple elements with a seaplane tour

seaplane tour in Mauritius

Of course, such an oceanic spot is perfect for an aerial tour… especially in a seaplane!

You’ll get the best of both worlds here, with the expansive views of flight and the gorgeous aquatic surroundings during touchdown.

Flic en Flac beach, Mauritius

The land here is largely undeveloped, making it a popular spot for resorts and vacationers seeking some truly tranquil island vibes; and with its charming shores and brilliant corals dotting the water, it’s also a great place to check out from the saddle!

During your ride, you’ll catch a good glimpse of all of these parts of the ecosystem, as the fresh sea breeze and warm air keep you in comfort all the way.

And when you’re done with your beach time, you can explore the nearby village itself, as well as popular spots like the Casela Nature Park (see #40).

46 – Soak up the scenery and culture of Mahebourg

Mahebourg, Mauritius

Filled with unique cultures, savory meals, natural wonders, and lively markets, the city of Mahebourg delights at every turn!

This small but mighty town is the civic hub of the country’s Grand Port District, sling along the east coast; and you’ll get a good sense of its strong nautical heritage (and its diversity) from the minute you set foot on the waterfront, where palm trees and fleets of sailboats mix with battle sites, museums, and food stalls.

Then you can go a bit inland – and back in time! – with a visit to the Mahebourg Museum, an 18th-century colonial home that’s filled with art, weapons, and fascinating exhibits tracing the long, complex history of the nation.

After that, it’s time to trek a little ways outside of town, where the quaint shores of Pointe d’Esny offer up all of the kitesurfing, windsurfing, and snorkeling that you could ever want.

This little fishing village certainly punches above its weight class when it comes to cool spots!

47 – Venture out to Rodrigues Island

Rodrigues Island, Mauritius

In many ways, this island certainly feels like a world unto itself – and in a way, it is!

While it’s technically owned by Mauritius, Rodrigues’ isolated location – 600 kilometers (373 miles) north of the country, alone in the middle of the sea – will make you feel like a castaway exploring stupendous uncharted realms!

Start your visit with some quality time on the sands of Trou d’ Argent Beach, an especially popular spot for a quiet romantic interlude.

Then head below the earth for a tour of Caverne Patate, an awe-inspiring cave system filled with surreal formations and hidden chambers.

And back out on the water, you can enjoy the views and try to catch your next meal on a fishing trip, as you cast your line in search of some of the area’s famous sport species.

This is one place where you’ll be happy to get a little lost!

Each shell has its own story, and taken together, they tell one of the greatest sagas on the planet, showcasing the aquatic world in all of its nuances, and the ways that we humans try to interact with it.

49 – Get a bit of surfing

surfing in Mauritius

Wind-based water sports tend to get a lot of the attention around here, but there are also some excellent spots for a more traditional round of surfing!

Tamarin Bay is a particularly popular option, along with much of the western coast; and along the southern section, you can enjoy hotspots like Le Morne and Darne.

While there are always swells in some form, November to April is generally considered the best season to get out and catch some waves.

One of the joys of surfing here is the variety; nearly all year round, you’ll find waves that are suitable to newcomers and professional point breakers alike.

And with a vibrant local scene, you’ll always be sure of good company… just be sure to share the waters!

50 – Enjoy a golf game (or several) with a view

Anahita Golf Club combines professionally designed courses with a phenomenal setting alongside a gorgeous lagoon, while Avalon Golf Estate provides a remarkable course framed by ferns and forests, with a multistory clubhouse to relax in between rounds.

You can also try out a sea kayaking expedition, and enjoy the island’s coastal side as you bob along the waves.

53 – Visit the most important Hindu Temples

Hindu temples in Mauritius

Among the many civilizations that have called this area home, the Indian diaspora has been one of the most influential; and it only takes one look at the many ornate Hindu temples around the island to understand the ongoing impact!

Pay a visit to Lord Shiva at Maheswarnath Mandir, a massive, 130-year old structure in the town of Triolet which was built on the remains of an old sugar production plant.

Or enjoy the ornate splendor of Jummah Masjid, which is technically a mosque, but features plenty of design details from India alongside the more traditional Middle Eastern patterns.

And if you’re in Grand Baie, be sure to stop by Tamil Surya Oudaya Sangam Temple, which is packed with brilliantly colored murals and magnificent statues, plus a marvelous exterior awash in rainbow shades.

54 – Pay your respects at Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin, Mauritius

And while we’re on the subject of sacred Hindu sites…

Grand Bassin is more of a natural treasure than a manmade one, but it’s easy to see why it became a spot of such profound religious importance; after all, its beauty feels otherworldly!

Tucked within an old strand of forest, you’ll find a breathtaking lake, glittering within a massive, sunken crater.

Nearby, you’ll see a giant statue of Shiva, as well as several temples scattered along the shores; each one is part of a larger narrative of worship in the region.

This spectacular spot – also known as Ganga Talao – has long been a place of pilgrimage, with travelers arriving on foot from all over the country to pay homage to its spiritual setting.

And no matter your own religious affiliation, there’s certainly something moving about the space!

55 – Visit with past animal residents at the Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum, Mauritius

Located amidst the hustle and bustle of Port Louis, the Natural History Museum is every bit as amazing as one would expect for such a biologically unique and diverse country; and as you browse through its extensive collections, you’ll get an amazing glimpse into the wildlife that once roamed right outside these doors.

The centerpiece is undoubtedly the dodo skeleton; discovered in 1904, it’s not only the most complete ones still in existence, but also an especially poignant symbol of the country’s past.

Flocks of these birds once ambled along Mauritius’ shores, until visiting European sailors killed them in droves, causing one of the most famous extinction events in modern history.

But you’ll also be able to dive into a number of other amazing exhibits, coming face to face with Jurassic plants, whale skulls, endangered birds, and a whole gallery devoted to those other iconic creatures: the giant tortoises.

After a day here, you’ll feel more in tune than ever with the strange and wonderful wildlife of the island!

56 – Unwind in style at some excellent spas

Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark, Mauritius

You’ll hear plenty about Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geopark during your visit… but there’s nothing quite like seeing it yourself!

The name comes from the distinctive shades of the area’s dunes, which almost seem unreal in their beauty.

But rest assured, the various hues are all the product of natural phenomena… some of which are still a mystery to this day!

Blue, purple, yellow, and red mix together in these amazing sands, accompanied by stripes of green, brown, and violet.

The effect of the mixing stripes of colors is truly unforgettable, so be sure to take plenty of time to linger and take in the magical patterns before you.

58 – Try out a flyboard

flyboarding in Mauritius

This is certainly one of the funkier sports in the area, and it’s the quickest way to fulfill any sci-fi fantasies you may have!

The premise is fairly uncomplicated; you strap your feet to a board attached to a series of small water jets, which propel you up into the air over the surface of the sea.

From there, though, the adventure gets wonderfully weird!

Once you’ve got the basics of hovering down pat, you can try dips, flips, and twists… just try not to take a full nosedive!

FLYn’Dive, located in Grand Baie, is the perfect place to try out this wacky sport; and you’ll soon have some pretty unique bragging rights for when you get back home!

59 – Enjoy the quiet beauty of Trou aux Cerfs

Trou aux Cerfs, Mauritius

The distinctive shape of this attraction comes from its volcanic structure… but don’t worry, it’s quite mellow!

The dormant mountain has had its fair share of eruptions over the millennia, resulting in one of its most famous landmarks: a massive sunken crater, at once foreboding and fascinating.

And it’s also a great spot to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, including Trois Mamelles and Rempart Mountain.

You can even go for a jog around this iconic geological form!

61 – Delve into the unique history of The Martello Tower

The Martello Tower, Mauritius

Throughout the 1800s, colonizing British forces created tons of Martello towers, short, squat, circular forts that were used to protect various coastal points of interest.

And in the Black River region, along La Preneuse Beach, you’ll find a pretty impressive example of the structure, which was once ubiquitous here.

While the aged walls are impressive in their own right, it’s what’s inside that’s especially compelling!

The Martello Tower Museum provides more context for these fascinating buildings, with diagrams, artifacts, and even the original cannons still perched atop the roof!

Take some time to stroll through the exhibits and absorb the stories of the soldiers that lived there, and ponder what life must have been like under the rule of various empires.

Keep an eye out for monkeys in the nearby trees, or just focus on the gorgeous shift of the colors in the sky!

63 – Take in the remarkable stories at Aapravasi Ghat

Aapravasi Ghat, Mauritius

Right in the midst of the capital, Aapravasi Ghat provides a compelling, if morally dubious, side to the nation’s history; for it was here that the region’s indentured servant industry began.

In 1834, the British government decided to try a form of indenturement – where captives could eventually earn their liberty through free labor – to replace the slave trade; and Mauritius, with its convenient location and ample sugarcane fields, was deemed a perfect testing ground.

For nearly 100 years, laborers were brought here from Madagascar, India, China, and Southeast Asia, either to work the fields around the island, or get transported to distant lands on every corner of the map, from Australia to the Caribbean.

As you explore the simple stone structures of this former immigration center, you’ll get a visceral sense of the scope and scale of this process, which became one of the largest – and most complicated – migration movements in human history.

64 – Roam around La Vallée des Couleurs

La Vallée des Couleurs, Mauritius

Or perhaps you’d rather get a taste for flying, as you trek upwards and hop aboard a zipline for an invigorating ride through the trees.

And even if you’d like to keep things mellow with a walking and driving tour, the visuals will keep you invigorated: tumbling waterfalls, multicolored sands, and peacock and turtle sightings galore.

Then head into town for more time by the sea at Pointe Aux Piments Public Beach, where you can explore the tidepools or head into the tides for a glimpse of passing sea turtles!

66 – Enjoy great views and a glimpse into organic farming at La Vallée de Ferney

La Vallée de Ferney, Mauritius

While many of the local landscapes pay tribute to the ecosystems that were lost during colonization,  La Vallée de Ferney takes things one step further, crafting an agricultural paradise that celebrates the beauty of the past while also utilizing the best sustainability methods of the future.

Tucked into the Bambou Mountains, this remarkable complex is actually a working farm, packed with produce that’s lovingly cared for using organic methods.

As you explore the work of the many members of the “agri-hub,” you can see firsthand the effects of eco-friendly farming – or taste them at the acclaimed Ferney Falaise Rouge restaurant!

Take in the wonders of the farm on a walking or 4 X 4 tour, or get even more into the workings of farm life by staying on the property, where off-the-grid luxury awaits you!

And at the Diamond Museum, you can see some of the world’s most amazing minerals up close… and even learn how to sculpt one into a perfect jewel!

Diamond cutting is a relatively new industry here; the main factory only opened in 1970.

But it’s part of a family legacy that stretches across two centuries and multiple continents, resulting in a unique set of styles that yield utterly gorgeous results.

Watch the incredible, intricate process of shaping each distinctive stone, and learn about the tools and tricks of the trade, as well as the amazing properties of the diamonds themselves.

Follow a local around different stalls and restaurants, taking bite after bite of the incredible cuisine for which the island is well known.

72 – Take an Underwater Waterfalls helicopter tour

Underwater Waterfalls helicopter tour in Mauritius

While this remarkable site may technically be an optical illusion, it’s one that you’ll never forget!

As the name suggests, the Underwater Waterfalls form a spectacular impression of cascading currents beneath the surface of the sea, forming one of the most iconic images of the country.

The effect comes courtesy of a gaping submarine plateau, where a sudden shift in water depth makes it look as though one section is tumbling straight downward into another.

And while this spectacle is amazing from every angle, it’s especially phenomenal when viewed on a helicopter tour!

Hovering high above the scene, you’ll be able to truly appreciate the amazing melding of different marine zones and geological structures, as clashing shades of blue and perpetually shifting tides put on a show unlike any other!
