There are plenty of things to do on Virginia Beach such as strolling along the famous boardwalk or heading slightly north to discover the 18th century Cape Henry historic lighthouse where you can climb up the tower for some excellent Atlantic vistas.

Richmond is further on and can be enjoyed as a day outing or a weekend away. Traveling 1.5 hours to Virginia’s capital city, this destination is one for the history buffs and cultural enthusiasts. Exploring the grandiose Victorian mansion house and park gardens of Maymont or discovering more about the world-famous author Edgar Allen Poe and his spooky tales at the Poe Museum, are just some of the many things to do in Richmond.

The next two are best kept for overnight endeavors. Raleigh is just under three hours from Norfolk and is favored for its green landscaping (it’s even nicknamed the “City of Oaks” thanks to its huge forested natural parks). Leaving behind Virginia, it’s located in North Carolina. There are many things to do in Raleigh such as appreciating the collection of fine arts at the North Carolina Museum of Art or heading outdoors to get a dose of history at the Mordecai Historic Park where you can visit an impressive Georgian-style plantation house.

Washington DC is just over three hours away (three hours and 15 minutes to be exact) and needs little introduction as the home of US politics and is steeped in history. Essential things to do in Washington DC include taking a tour of the U.S. Capitol building, looking at the White House in the flesh, or exploring the National Mall jam-packed with iconic monuments and memorials.

Final thoughts

Built around the watersides, the port city is a fabulous base for your time in Virginia. From water activities to parks to memorials to music venues, the fun things to do in Norfolk appeal to all sorts of travelers, whether young or old.
